What Is Broncos.com Worth?

I am sure you’ve heard the news that the Broncos.com domain name will be coming up for auction during the TRAFFIC conference in a couple of weeks. According to organizer Rick Schwartz, “the reserve is less than half of what Cowboys.com sold for a few years back,” (which was $370,000, as recorded by Domaining.com).

The most obvious buyer would be the Denver Broncos NFL team, which currently uses the longer DenverBroncos.com for its website. According to Forbes, the Broncos team is worth nearly $1.2 billion, so it can afford an acquisition like this. The question is whether or not the team believes it would add value to them since it’s not like someone would be able to compete with them if they don’t purchase the domain name. Frankly, they don’t exactly need the domain name, but it would be a great opportunity to shorten their current url.

There are other suiters for the domain name as well. Plenty of high schools, college, amateur and pro teams throughout the world are nicknamed the Broncos. For instance, Boise State University sports teams share the Broncos nickname, and the Idaho Statesman reported that the University athletic department projected “$34 million in operating revenue.”

Clearly, this domain name is a valuable asset, and I am curious what you think it is worth. I don’t expect you to project the sale price because we don’t know who will be bidding on the domain name at auction, but you are welcome to share what you think this particular domain name is worth.

  1. There’s got to be a businessman in Oakland who loves the Raiders and would like to spite the Broncos who would dish out six figures to put a “Broncos Suck” on the site followed by a “and they were too cheap to buy this domain”.

  2. In today’s domain environment, I think you can acquire a much stronger profit potential name if you’re shopping in the 6 figure range.
