My Largest Offer

I spend quite a bit of time trying to buy domain names. Some of the best deals I’ve made have come on domain names I privately acquired that had not been on the market. Sometimes you have to overpay to buy a domain name that will end up looking like a steal.

Yesterday on X, I asked people about their largest offer to buy a domain name. I thought it would be interesting to see what other investors are willing to offer for an investment-quality domain name acquisition.

For me, the amount was $180,000 USD in 2020 – 2021 for a one word .com domain name that was and is still owned by a major corporation. I started at $63,000, raised to $100,000, then to $150,000, and finally to $180,000. This was done over the course of approximately one year. I was passed around to a couple different legal teams in this multi-national company, but the brand-team opted to keep this domain name. It still isn’t being used, but my offer wasn’t enough to move the needle.

My comfort level is below $100,000 these days, but I would increase that number for the right opportunity. To make a six figure offer, it would have to be an exceptional one word .com domain name that isn’t listed for sale anywhere and probably has never been listed for sale. Domain names can sit in my portfolio for years, so it would need to be a banger to offer that much and I’d need to have confidence that it was a great value.

What was your largest offer? No need to share the domain name but feel free to share the type of name.

  1. Many offers for my
    Squarely.com Gxnx.com and of course
    BullShitWebsites.com which is priceless

It has given me so much joy in life and how do you put a price in that….but an offer of millions$$$USD …WILL BE considered and make me happy 😌 😌 😁

  2. $10K is the most I’ve ever offered.

I’d be willing to spend $100K on a one-word dotcom I was certain had a market guaranteeing a $1M+ sell in the future. Ex: Duck.com, Blue.com, or Hockey.com, etc.

It would be a ‘retirement fund’ type of acquisition.

Otherwise, my average private market acquisition is about $2K.
Lot of gems in that niche market.

  3. $4,000 and I acquired the domain at that price, which is the exact match for my business.

Estibot values the domain at $80,000. The previous owner had died and his “web consultant” somehow retained possession of the domain. Seemed a little shady at first, but the deal went through and that was six years ago.
