Do You Own Your FirstNameLastName.com?

Owning your first name last name .com domain name is a flex for some people. It can make it easier for people to find you online, and it allows you to own your exact identity online. For people who are in a business selling their own services like domain brokers, consultants, or attorneys, having your first / last .com domain name is akin to a brand matching domain name.

I don’t own my first/last name .com, but I made sure I bought the matching domain names for my kids, and an industry colleague acquired my wife’s and gifted it when we got married.

It looks like quite a few domain investors I know own their own first/last name .com domain names, although the majority I checked do not resolve to any website. I assume they secured their domain name for future use and/or to prevent someone else from having it. Some others forward their domain name to LinkedIn or their own website. I only saw one being used on its own – JohnBerryhill.com.

Several years ago, I would buy the first/last name of close friend’s kids when they were born. I still manage all of those domain names since the kids are too young to use. I stopped doing that as it got more expensive – and an expense that will continue growing each year without handing them off.

I would recommend that people secure their own first/last name .com domain name if they can for a reasonable price. At the very least, it can be useful as a marketing tool and ensures that nobody else with the same name can use it and potentially cause confusion. I wrote about having an online presence when doing outbound marketing to sell domain names, and this is the perfect usecase for this type of domain name.

  4. Even though I am old guy who took classical piano for 8 years, my teenage kids are GEN M (as in Mobile).
They dont need names. They are only known by their instagram, faceplant……. handles 🙂

    Good luck selling your domains.
Never hurts to take piano lessons you might needs them.

  5. For me, I prefer just lastname.com. And yes I got it. I think it’s more “classy” than firstnamelastname.com. There’s nothing better than an email address like firstname@lastname.com. Could’ve had the .net and .org too way back whenever but didn’t want them.
