#30YearsofCOM Promoted by GoDaddy at NASCAR Race

Danica Patrick will be driving the GoDaddy #10 car at tomorrow’s CampingWorld.com 500 NASCAR race in Phoenix, Arizona. As you can see from the tweet below, Patrick’s GoDaddy car will be promoting .com as it celebrates its 30 year anniversary this weekend.

I am sure you’ve heard the story of Symbolics.com by now. In short, Symbolics.com was the first domain name ever registered, and it is now owned by Aron Meystedt. Symbollics.com was registered on March 15, 1985, which is 30 years ago on Sunday.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of .com domain names, Verisign has been doing quite a bit of marketing. Danica Patrick’s GoDaddy car has a hashtag logo “#30yearsofCOM” with a large .com and “powered by Verisign” on the hood. I didn’t see other photos of the car, so I am not sure if that hashtag or other Verisign logos are elsewhere on the car.

I presume this is an expensive promotion. GoDaddy has the greatest number of .com domain names registered of any domain registrar, so perhaps they worked out some sort of deal for this promotion. There are going to be a lot of people who see this, and I will be tracking the number of hashtag mentions for #30yearsofcom.

I don’t watch NASCAR, but it will be interesting to know if the announcers mention the 30th anniversary of .com or Symbolics.com during tomorrow’s race. Hopefully it’s a good race for the GoDaddy car. Wonder if any other TLDs will use the GoDaddy car in the future as a means of registry promotion.

  1. You would think Symbolics.com would be an actual working website considering what a “Symbolic” occasion this is.

It’s been down all day. There could have been something on there promoting the industry instead it’s a dead website.
