2021 vs 2025 – % of .coms in my Portfolio

I don’t closely track the percentage of domain extensions in my portfolio. I could have 75% .com or I could have 99% .com domain names in my portfolio, and the only implication is higher (in general) renewal costs. Because I buy more domain names that I sell, my portfolio has been growing each year, so tracking the increase in renewal costs isn’t really helpful in seeing how the percentage of .com domain names is changing.

I’ve primarily invested in .com domain names since I started my business 20 years ago. I think great one and two word .com domain names are the most desirable assets for businesses around the world, and I have always wanted to invest in domain names like these that sell themselves.

In the last few years, I’ve noticed some shifting in end user domain name demand, and I’ve shifted my portfolio a bit in response. Companies in different industries seem more willing to utilize non .com domain names for their businesses. Time will tell how these decisions work out, and I maintain a huge list of companies that upgraded to .com domain names, so I still think .com is the bellwether.

I have been maintaining my inventory management in Excel in a specific way since 2021. This way has allowed me to determine the percentage of .com domain names in my portfolio at the end of 2021. That number was 98.3%. Even then, most of the non .com domain names I owned were either corporate non .com assets or related to .com domain names in my portfolio.

In the last few years, I’ve spent much more time searching for and bidding on non .com domain names. The potential sales margins seem better to me in many cases. I still spend the bulk of my investment capital on .com domain names, but I have been adding more non .com inventory.

As it stands right now, my portfolio is made up of 90.6% .com domain names. Beyond .com, I have multiple .AI, .XYZ, .VC, and .CO domain names. I have one-offs of a few others, some of which are personal (Elliot.link for example). In the last few years, I’ve sold or have ongoing LTO deals on multiple .AI, .XYZ, and .CO domain names. I have yet to sell a single .VC domain name despite having around 30 of them. I am sure it’s more an issue with my picking than anything else.

I would say all but one of these non-.com domain names is considered “inventory” to me. The only exception is Navigator.ai, which was my largest – by far – non .com domain name purchase.

As end user domain name usage continues to change, my portfolio will continue to reflect that change. I imagine I could get to a point of 80% non .com domain names in my portfolio, but that is TBD. I don’t anticipate spending significant sums of money acquiring individual non .com domain names in the near future, but I am always on the hunt for good deals.
