AJ Scaramucci made the news last week when he spent more than $16 million to acquire a Pokémon card in auction. It’s apparently a rare graded card that was previously owned by Logan Paul. It was the largest amount ever spent on a trading card in an auction, according to Guinness World Records.
While AJ might now own this special Pokémon card, his father, Anthony Scaramucci, owns a fantastic domain name via his SkyBridge Capital investment firm. In fact, about ten years ago, I exchanged some emails with Anthony about domain names.
If you visit Coyotes.com, you can see it forwards to SkyBridge Capital’s website. The company has owned this one word .com domain name for more than ten years. Prior to the acquisition, historical Whois records at DomainTools show Coyotes.com was owned by NameFind, the portfolio company operated by GoDaddy. Prior to that, Coyotes.com was owned by Ultimate Search.
I am somewhat surprised a company like SkyBridge or other venture capital firms haven’t made more investments in descriptive domain names like Coyotes.com purely to own the best possible Internet real estate that can be built into global brands. I suppose that is good for investors who are still acquiring domain names.
At some point, I think companies are going to value domain names in the same way the general public values real estate in the most desirable areas. At that point, there will be a rush to acquire the best domain names that aren’t yet developed. Perhaps it will be someone like AJ Scaramucci who acquires exceptional domain names for his portfolio company, Solari Capital.
