Who is Winning Black Friday This Year in Google?

When it comes to Black Friday, I presume a great deal of traffic to various retailer websites comes from Google. Having top rankings for Black Friday keywords is likely a driving of significant traffic. With Black Friday coming up at the end of this week, I thought it would be interesting to see what websites are doing best for Black Friday searches.

Listed below are the top 3 results for a variety of Black Friday searches in Google. There’s nothing scientific about my research, but I did use a browser in incognito mode in order to show results in a more  unbiased manner. I did use the Google Adwords Keyword Planner Tool to see what keywords are popular at this time of year. I did not include Google news mentions, and the top 3 are unique websites, even if one of the listed websites holds 2 spots.

Here are the searches and top 3 results as of this morning:

  • BlackFriday.com
  • TheBlackFriday.com
  • BestBuy.com

  • TheBlackFriday.com
  • BlackFriday.com
  • BestBuy.com

Black Friday Deals

  • BestBuy.com
  • TheBlackFriday.com
  • Walmart.com

Black Friday Specials

  • Walmart.com
  • BestBuy.com
  • TheBlackFriday.com

I also thought it would be neat to see if any domain name companies have any special Black Friday offers or discounts, so here are the top three results for Domain Names Black Friday:

  • Instra.com
  • Enom.com
  • Name.com

It sure looks like Best Buy is ranking pretty well so far (at least from my searches) for Black Friday keyword searches, although I don’t know what the traffic is like for each of these searches (meaning, I don’t know how much of an impact these results will have). Additionally, I did not check product and brand positions in Google, and there is likely considerable traffic there, too. We’ll see how the results change as we get closer to Black Friday and social media mentions and links increase.

Interestingly, Kevin Ham’s company, Reinvent Technology, owns BlackFriday.com, and it seems to be doing very well for them.

  1. Something that is even more interesting at least to me is that you can add “The” (TheBlackFriday.com) in front of a popular term and outrank billion dollar corporations.

  2. Ok, I’ll ask about the elephant in the room…

So Ham’s BlackFriday.Com is killin’ it, but any sight of any URL using Schilling’s TLD, .BlackFriday?

I tried looking for it myself, but couldn’t find any listed. Even used the SITE: command. Nothing. Zip. Nada. Only references to the gtld itself. No websites on any of the 7 or so result pages I selected.

Elliot, based on your findings, I think it is safe to safe that .COM keywords domains are now, and always have been, where the action is. My guess is that this trend will continue into the future for obvious reasons. Sorry, Frank. Sorry, gtlds. Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to beat Google for the G’s they wanted. Now, they went and picked up their marbles and are refusing to play so that the whole gtld pyramid crumbles.

Gonna be a sad time at NamesCon when all the gtld cheerleaders realize that gtld investment strategy was a bad one.
