Why I Retained the Elliot’s Blog Branding

When I rebranded my blog from ElliotsBlog.com to DomainInvesting.com a year and a half ago, I announced that I would remove the Elliot’s Blog branding at some point in the near future. As you can see from the logo and possibly from the daily summary newsletter, I have not yet removed this branding. This has not been a simple oversight, and I want to explain my rationale.

The DomainInvesting.com brand suits this blog much better than ElliotsBlog.com for a number of business reasons. I think it is more authoritative to people who don’t know me, and I also think it will eventually make it easier to sell the website whenever that time comes. For now though, I think it is important that people understand it is still a blog, and just about all of the articles I write have my opinion.

During the planning stages for the rebranding, I had thought that I would change the format a bit and hire writers while I take a bit of a step back. Although I would be happy to bring on an additional writer or two, I’ve basically stuck to the original concept that has been working now for 8 years (as of a week from now). I share news and insight, and I also offer advice and feedback based on my experiences.

I think the DomainInvesting.com rebranding was a success and will pay dividends, but I think it is important to acknowledge that it is still essentially a blog that I operate.

I would imagine there will be a point in time that Elliot’s Blog is removed from the branding, but I can’t predict when that will be or what the impetus for that will be. For now, I am going to keep doing what I am doing.

As always, your feedback is welcomed and encouraged!

  1. Slow news day? šŸ˜‰

Don’t worry, we’ll still read your blog no matter what you call it, but I like it most when you write the content.

  2. You must probably still see traffic in your logs that comes from google search term “elliots blog”. Some of those will be me as that’s how I still search for your site. The old name must be more ingrained in my mind as I remember it far easier than the new domain investing name.

  3. I’m confused. Where is this lingering “ElliotsBlog.com” branding of which you speak? Or are you merely referring to issues of appearance and form? All I see is mention of DI.

Regarding the form and appearance, I have always liked it, and have even consciously thought so. So if that’s what you’re talking about, would hate to see you remove it. I even kind of accidentally discovered the person who did your site one day, and so I mention that I think she did a great job. People should definitely consider hiring her when they need this kind of work.

I sometimes naturally find myself referring to this as “Elliot’s blog,” though it has nothing to do with the former name at all, only a natural inclination. Otherwise “DI” for short if I’m not referring to the whole name or domain.

Now on a side note: Can anyone believe stocks.com is not resolving still. Maybe one of you big domain whales or sharks can get whoever is behind it to sell cheap and snap it up. I remember reading once that it had 20,000 hits a day. I realize parking has kind of died, but I would not have thought it could be completely dead for domains like that. Or is it?

  4. You want the honest truth E, when I tell people about your blog I say Elliot’s Blog because perhaps I am aging but it is so easy to recall.

When away from my home and at a strangers computer or hotel etc I cannot recall the name of ANY domainer’s blog, honestly. A part from Rick and Elliot!

Was it domain names wire, wires, news, newswire, blog, investings ing or er investment domain domainers ARG, drives me nuts. So I end up searching google simply as Michael Berkins blog, Elliots Blog, Andrew etc.

My gut is while Domaininvesting may suite the blog better it IS known as Elliot’s Blog and I certainly wouldn’t buy your blog without THAT name šŸ™‚

    • Thanks…

I agree with quite a bit of what you wrote, but I also think a prospective buyer would be able to add to the blog and offer much more than I am currently offering (perhaps brokerage services for example). Elliot’s Blog is far more limiting.

  5. Just wanted to add….

I understand you look at the blog as pertaining to domains therefore Domaininvesting makes more sense then your own name BUT!

What you have accomplished is MAKING your name synonymous with domaining, no easy job and you should be proud.

You are now right up there with J&J, Mr. Christie and everyone else who took their name and evoked a product or service.
