Where Do You Buy Domain Names?

I was looking over my recent domain name purchases today, and I noticed that most of my domain buys in the last six months have either been private acquisitions or auction purchases, the majority of which were from NameJet. I was curious about where you buy domain names.

I set up a short poll below to ask where you are buying most of your domain names. I didn’t provide full details on each of the selections, so I broke them out below:

  • Hand registrations (new registrations from registrars like Name.com, Go Daddy, eNom, Dynadot…etc)
  • Domain auctions (NameJet, Go Daddy, Snapnames, eBay, Flippa…etc)
  • Private acquisitions (purchases directly from other domain owners via email)
  • Domain forums (buy now or make offers from DNForum, NamePros, DBR…etc)
  • Domain marketplaces (Sedo, Afternic, BuyDomains, Aftermarket.com…etc)
  • Domain brokers (Domain Holdings, Igloo, Media Options)
  • Other (anything I may have forgotten)

  1. @Elliot,

I looked carefully to see if Domaining.com was in any prominent category, but I’m having trouble locating it. I suppose CAX.com can go under “Other”, but what about Domaining.com featured listing? I thought you psoted a whole article indicating that you sold a good amount by using that? It could be an oversight. Just curious…

Oh BTW what about weekly domain listings, what would that be under?

    • Was sort of an oversight, but I assume the # would be small and would fit under “other” perhaps along the lines of buying on Facebook or LinkedIn… I also think Cax would be considered a domain marketplace purchase.

For the record, I haven’t sold a considerable volume of names via my blog using Domaining.com headlines. I have sold a decent dollar value worth of them.

  2. NameCheap & GoDaddy for Hand registrations and bids at Namejet & GoDaddy. Good Poll Elliot, you should try the reverse poll too.

Where Do You Sell Domain Names?

  3. For me, it’s a tie between marketplaces like GoDaddy and Namejet, although I haven’t been back NJ/Enom after the situation with the withheld Pre-Release last August. Some of my best finds were 1-2 word .TVs and .MEs found at GD in 2010. It’s much harder to come across those gems today.

Only bought one name off a blog (this one).

I’ve purchased several names at Sedo – mostly .TV and .ME. I prefer BIN at Sedo and have never made an offer on a name I know is most likely astronomically priced. I stick to low-hanging fruit. Picked up a couple of names at forums, but not in the last year.

Handregs have worked well for me. I was able handreg a few .DEs and .coms that flipped pretty quickly. Others I’ve dropped, and about 80% of the ones I’ve checked have been picked up by DomainMarket or similar outfits, or developed by end users.
