What Tools & Products Do You Need?

Domain ToolsI use a variety of handy tools every day to help make smarter domain acquisition, sales, and development decisions. Many of these tools weren’t created specifically for domain investors, but they work very well for our needs. Some of the tools I use just about every day include Whois History, website archive, keyword tools, reverse IP search, Alexa, and Compete.

Every so often, I wish that a specific tool or product was created and/or was more accessible or better publicized. For instance, wish there was an intuitive tool where I could type in a keyword phrase, and the tool would spit out associated domain names, Whois results, and let me know if the domain name is a developed website. This would save time and generate domain acquisition targets more easily.

On the product-side, I wish there was much more intuitive and easy to use web development software. I would love a program where I could just drag different elements into place, and it would code everything for me. I wouldn’t want something that created websites that look like they’re from the 1990s – I am talking real deal development that looks great and allows me to create cool things.

I know there are thousands of people working to build tools and products that will help web developers and many who are looking to create something that is helpful to domain investors. I am sure a few of them read domain blogs such as this to see what people want and need – and would pay for if they knew the product existed.

So I ask you, what tools or products would help you become a better web developer or domain investor?

  2. Elliot,

There’s so many different tools I have found and they are all very good in their own right. Some tools stay at the top of the tool box and some end up at the bottom, only to retrieve when you need it. There’s always new tools coming out all the time and I’m always in search for them. The one I’ve used the most and longest is DomainTools.com, spend a lot of time there. Agree, I wish there was a cutting edge tool(no pun intended) for mass development.

    Thanks for your insight.

  3. Great post Elliot – there are a lot of useful tools that could be developed for the Domain Investing market.

One that I would like to see is a tool that could take into account data from the Google Adwords keyword tool, Alexa, and Compete to determine the estimated amount of revenue a domain could generate if developed.

I currently do this manually and find that I can usually get pretty close – but it is a VERY manual process. While this is definitely a challenging tool to create it could really help Domain Investors understand which domains could produce the most revenue if developed.

  4. El,
I’d like to see a tool developed and used by
the Registrars to ALERT the Domain Name
Buyers that He/She are treading into Trademark
Territory and Buyer beware by purchasing.
    This might help:
1.) stop Newbie’s from purchasing a potential problem,
2.) Keep Seasoned buyers from a hasty registration,
3.) Cut down on future looming litigation,
    4.) Shore-up our industry through cyber-corrections.

    thanks Elliot,

  5. Would like to see much better development software. Should be able to buy one product, install it on your PC and drag and drop away to create a decent looking web site. Price should be under $100.

There are lots under that price point right now but they are all crappy.

  6. I don’t think you’re ever going to see the type of quality drag/drop web development software you speak of. Even if the program laid everything out nicely, it would likely be trash under the hood. Not to mention the cross-browser compatibility issues you would run into.

Instead of waiting for that all-inclusive solution, spend that $100 on a few intro to web design books and dedicate a few hours a week to reading them. You’d be surprised how far they’ll take you.

I’m in the other boat. Development skills with no domains 😉

  7. I would like to see better name server management tools. There are a lot of tools available and many of the registrar’s do okay job.

I have maybe around a thousand domains I manage for clients. The name servers are all over the place. I keep a copy of the zone file for troubleshooting — and I would like a faster tool to make keeping, updating and organizing this information.
