What Go Daddy and Sedo Partnership News Means for You and Me

SedoHere’s some big news heading into DomainFest conference week. According to a press release distributed this morning, Sedo and Go Daddy have entered into a new partnership allowing domain names listed for sale at Sedo to be shown to potential buyers at GoDaddy.

The obvious reason this is important is that people looking to register domain names will be shown domain names that are listed for sale at Sedo. A person registering a name may have an interest in upgrading to a far superior name if given the opportunity, and I believe Sedo has the largest domain marketplace.

Over the last several months and maybe even years, companies like Sedo and Afternic have been stressing that domain owners who want to sell their domain names need to have them priced. I would imagine that only domain names that are available with buy it now prices at Sedo will be shown to buyers at Go Daddy, enabling them to buy the domain name right away. Afternic domain names have been listed at Godaddy since October (coincidentally announced at the last major domain conference).

The questions I would have for Sedo and Go Daddy are:

  • How long will it take to be paid after a sale is made?
  • Will domain names that don’t have buy it now prices be shown?
  • Will domain names need to be registered at Go Daddy to be shown in this channel?
  • Is there additional commission taken out for a sale in this channel?
  • Will Go Daddy be lowering its commission rates to list names in its premium sales channel?

Congratulations to Sedo and Godaddy on this big news. The press release is below.

Sedo and Go Daddy Partnership Makes More Domains Available to More Buyers than Ever Before
The World’s Largest Registrar and Leading Domain Marketplace Partner to offer One-Stop Solution for Business Owners and Domain Buyers

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan 30, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) — The largest domain name marketplace and monetization provider, Sedo, today announced a partnership with Go Daddy, the world’s largest provider of Web hosting, domain name registrations and new SSL Certificates. Already a prime location for businesses and individuals looking for a domain name, this new partnership enables registrar Go Daddy to expand its offering and provide end users with access to more premium domains than ever before. When a visitor searches for a domain or keyword at GoDaddy.com, matching names from Sedo’s marketplace will now also be displayed for potential buyers to purchase.

“Go Daddy wants to help small businesses grow larger, and finding the right domain name is the place to start,” said Paul Nicks, Go Daddy’s Director of Product Development for the Aftermarket. “Giving customers access to many premium domain names, including Sedo’s Buy Now domain names, Go Daddy can ensure our customers get the best domain name for their website or business.”

Go Daddy, the world’s largest registrar, is the latest partner to join Sedo’s Multi-Listing Service, SedoMLS. Through this partnership, Go Daddy can now offer its customers the option to purchase domain names that are already “taken” as easily as they would register a domain for the first time. The domain market leader, Sedo currently has 15 million domains for sale in its marketplace. SedoMLS allows any domains listed at a “Buy Now” price to be displayed within Go Daddy’s search results, reaching the largest potential audience of domain buyers.

“As one of the most popular places worldwide for small business owners, entrepreneurs, or individuals looking for the right domain name, we are thrilled to be partnering with Go Daddy,” said Sedo’s CEO, Tim Schumacher. “Through our SedoMLS partnership, we can offer millions of domain buyers the widest choice of domain names, which will help them make the right decision for their business, and purchase the names they need to find success online.”

  1. This is great news if we can sell at GoDaddy but get paid by Sedo right away – not having to wait at least five weeks for a troublesome cheque.

  2. The answer to your question n°2 is here:

…“Giving customers access to many premium domain names, including Sedo’s Buy Now domain names, Go Daddy can ensure our customers get the best domain name for their website or business.”

Only domain names with Buy-it-now prices will be shown. It makes perfect sense for Sedo/GoDaddy/domain owner/domain buyer.

  3. “This is great news if we can sell at GoDaddy but get paid by Sedo right away – not having to wait at least five weeks for a troublesome cheque.” Yes that should be perfect!!!
    🙂

I am just wondering that, if a domain is listed for sale at Sedo and Afternic, GoDaddy search result(s) showing which one first, showing both or what?
Because Afternic is GoDaddy partner as well.
And GoDaddy started showing Afternic domains last month.

  4. Not a lot of detail from their press release.

I hope GoDaddy fixes this bad problem of taking a month or more to pay for domain sales .

GoDaddy said they were going to fix this and we still have not heard a peep from them about when this will finally be fixed.

    Hey GoDaddy, wake up!!!

  5. With all this cross marketing over different domain aftermarkets, what if you have a buy it now domain listed at Godaddy, Sedo and Afternic, and by some coincidence the domain sells at Godaddy and at Sedo at around the same time to two different buyers? Which buyer would get the domain? A domainer can potentially list a domain for sale on Afternic, Sedo and Godaddy all at the same time.

  6. Hi Elliot,

We wanted to address some of your questions, where we’re able!

How long will it take to be paid after a sale is made?
    – Sellers’ payments are released within one business day, after the domain has transferred into the buyer’s control.

Will domain names that don’t have buy it now prices be shown?
    – Only domains set at a Buy Now price and listed with Sedo will be distributed at Go Daddy.

Will domain names need to be registered at Go Daddy to be shown in this channel?
    – No, any domain name listed with a Buy Now price—regardless of the registrar it is registered with—will be displayed in search results at Go Daddy’s site.

Is there additional commission taken out for a sale in this channel?
    – No, the standard SedoMLS Network commission of 20% applies to any sale where the buyer originates at Go Daddy or any other SedoMLS partner.

Let me know if any other questions about the SedoMLS integration with Go Daddy. We’re looking forward to talking more about the partnership at DOMAINfest in California this week.

  7. Has sedo optimized Godaddy.com registered domains to go live on Sedo MLS …

seems to be this error coming through, when you go to sedo, and try to list a godaddy registered domain into the MLS network.

Registrar not yet supporting all SedoM… GoDaddy

  8. I dont like it and wont allow it for my sales. Godaddy TDNAM sucks almost as bad a Afternic does. If I were able to get paid for all of the dead-beat domain offers that came through Godaddy alone, I’d have enough to pay off my home. Add Afternic to it and I might be able to afford a second home.

This dead-beat domain auction problem, where people make offers for domains and then never pay, has to stop. It is at epidemic levels. Godaddy and Afternic are among the worst for allowing this to happen.

Then there is the time to pay. Godaddy takes WAY TOO LONG to pay for sale.

So, NO Daddy for me — thank you.

  9. Hi @Domains,

Thanks for your question above about the possibility of buyers purchasing a name simultaneously.

Sedo has a safeguard built into the SedoMLS product that prevents names listed with us from selling twice, if the domain owner no longer has control over the name. This feature applies to all partners in the SedoMLS network. When you activate SedoMLS Premium, our Sell Now Assurance feature prevents any Buy Now name from selling, either through the SedoMLS network or through our website, if you are no longer the owner of that name. This will work as long as your domain is still with the same registrar as when you activated SedoMLS Premium.

    Daniel @ Sedo

  10. I don’t think anything will change. All companies delay the payouts for their protection. Also the longer they keep funds the more operating capital they have and earn more interest.

    Too bad for us
