Top Rankings for Domain Keywords

I think it’s interesting to track Google search results for various keyword terms related to the domain industry. Listed below, are the ten most frequently searched “domain name” keywords (according to the Google Adwords Keyword Tool) and the top search results for each term.

I will try to follow this monthly, and perhaps we’ll be able to see some trends as things change. The top ten keyword terms are listed below by search volume.

  • Domain Name Search – InstantDomainSearch.com
  • Domain Name – Go Daddy
  • Domain Name Registration  –  Go Daddy
  • Free Domain Name – FreeDomain.co.nr
  • Buy Domain Name  –  Go Daddy
  • Domain Name Generator – Name Station
  • Register Domain Name  –  Go Daddy
  • What is a Domain Name – About.com
  • Free Domain Name Registration – Register.com
  • Domain Name Lookup – Network Solutions
  • Domain Name System – Wikipedia

Just FYI, I used the global exact match search functionality for this. In addition, I used a proxy website to search Google so my search history wouldn’t impact results.

I am sure there are other ways to identify the top searched results, and if you have a suggestion, feel free to share.

  1. Very interesting to see these results! I was surprised how often “domain name search” is searched on Google compared to the others . Wouldn’t the highest searched term be “domain names” though still (although not by all that much over “domain name search”). I was really surprised by the cpc data for these terms as well though, most of them have a cpc of like $20.00 or more, I really don’t see how they can pay that high for just a single potential customer though (like how could an ad-clicker for “domain name registration” possibly have an average spending of more than $27 to make that click worth it?). They’d have to register like at least 3 or 4 domains name each on average to be worth that much. I guess maybe the value comes from upselling other services like hosting to these customers but still lol. And “free domain name” has a cpc of $11.00+.

    • Well think of it this way, how often do you change your domain registrar once you register a domain with it? Or for that matter hosting? This is assuming you don’t have catastrophic problems… So the price could still be very justified maybe not instantly but over the course of a lifetime or even a year, that customer may be worth far more than the $20 they paid to acquire that customer.

  2. I think that was definately what I first started using, although now i just use Godaddy when i want to search for a single domain in all the top extensions (since i’m always on that site already anyways lol). I Love the Domain Name Analyzer software if I’m going to check many names/combinations though

  3. Very Surprised to see Wikipedia and About.com in the list. With all the money These Registrars have I would have thought the Terms Would have been Bought . But Searches with “Domain” in it anywhere brings up a Godaddy Advert at top of the Page.
