“Top Food Takeout App” in China Operates on a .ME

Did you know the “top food takeout app” in China operates on a .ME domain name? According to Seeking Alpha, the company, Ele.me, raised money in May of last year at a valuation of “between $5.5 billion to $6 billion.” The company made news today when it was announced that Alibaba bought out Baidu and other investors that own the company. Crunchbase shows that the company raised over $3 billion in funding.

As you are likely aware by now, the .ME domain name extension is the ccTLD for the country of Montenegro. Interestingly, it does not look like Ele.me owns the typo Eleme.com domain name. It does own the eleme.cn ccTLD for the Chinese market, but surprisingly, the domain name does not seem to resolve. It looks like someone else owns ele.cn, although the company’s branding always seems to include the domain name extension in it.

I would have to assume this is one of the most trafficked .ME domain names.

I thought this was an interesting tidbit to share.

  1. This is very interesting to know. Thanks.

It’s also interesting to note that this multi-billion dollar growth and acquisition was not impeded by the absence of a dot-com: And that’s particularly noteworthy because we’re constantly reminded by those brokers who specialize in the China market that dot-com and dot-cn are the only extensions that are prized (and used) by important Chinese companies.

I guess this was an aberration…

  2. Like I said before about some being so special and so unique as to be truly one of a kind. Just like Home.Loans. Interesting coincidence, was thinking of .me for examples of that just within hours ago.
