Sunday Updates

It’s been a great weekend and I hope you enjoyed yours, too. Here are some updates.

  • Last week, I suggested you work with a buyer’s broker to try and acquire a domain name.  I want to give a public thank you to  Aaron Visaggio and  Neil Kavanaugh of  Afternic  for helping me complete a private acquisition this past week. With their help, I was able to purchase BikeRentals.com. You can check out SkiRentals.com to see how I envision a new site.
  • I read Andrew’s article about Go Daddy coming up with a system to eliminate the 60 day transfer lock (not including NEW registrations). It doesn’t make any sense that the company would revert the Whois to what it was prior to the lock being added. If I just bought the name and want to transfer it or flip it, I can’t have it locked. Under this new regulation, it would revert the registration back to the former owner.
  • I made a few aftermarket purchases last week. Some of the names I bought include: BikeRentals.com, CorporateReputation.com, and LivingWills.com. What names did you purchase in the last few days?
  • Looks like Repair.com recently launched, and it is helmed by someone with significant experience online. I think that’s going to be a good business to follow and see how it grows and ranks in Google. Thanks to Ted from Internet Venture Holdings for sending me the article  about the company.
  • I don’t own a single .TV name right now (to my knowledge) but it does seem like that market is heating up a bit. I’ve noticed quite a few large public sales reported, and I’ve heard some rumors of a few large private sales. What have you been seeing?

  1. Congrats on bikerentals.com.

    I’ve recently purchased:

    penncove.com
    clearcrest.com
    yorkriver.com
    penington.com
    quantstone.com
    chimneycreek.com

  2. While there have been a few high-profile .TV sales in recent weeks, I don’t believe those are representative of the “.TV market” I believe those sales were more the result of a well-connected facilitator/broker who has already stated he does not want to be contacted to broker domains. I have noticed more usage of .TV on television programming but have not really noticed a large number of aftermarket inquiries. With .COM even so-so keywords are hard to find available. However, a developer willing to launch on .TV can more easily add an extra word and find an available domain. Regardless, my average .TV sale is typically higher in price than my average .COM sale.

  3. There certainly have been more sales than just the ones by the “well connected facilitator” who is not a broker as I know him well. He just knows the market and the players but for the most part is focused on his own portfolio.

He is not related or connected with Igal Lichtman who has been selling a good number of .tv for five figures, some not reported. Kids.tv was reported as a favor to me. There has been a pick up recently when you see 3 .tv in the DN Journal top 10 of all sales its a big week for .tv.

Whether this level will be sustained who knows ? There are plenty of people handregging for $10.99 and selling for $500, they are not reported in Dn Journal and may be small to the big hitters but for the little guy its more than fine.

  4. Thanks for your information, it help me alot in domaining, I often visit your blog and receive alot of useful advices about domain name and invest domain name.

In my country we dont interested in domain dot TV, we just buy and sell dot COM or dot VN and COM.VN. But from now I will have alook on dot TV.

    Thanks elliotsblog and Leonard Britt.

  5. .TV is going to be huge, what you’re seeing is only the tip of the iceberg.

Not a month goes by when one doesn’t hear of a 5 figure sale, most aren’t reported, but the whois changes are easy to track.

A far cry from what the extension was pre-2010, those invested in the space already know it, MHB sold Jeu.tv for $50k, not too shabby. 😉

  6. Hi Elliot, great purchases.

It would be interesting to know how you came to acquire these domains. Did you identify them as ones you wanted to buy before the fact, or did you come across their availability another way?

  7. Congrats Elliot on bikerentals.com, CorporateReputation.com and LivingWills.com.

I was pleased to be the only NameJet bidder for honeymooned.com @ $59.

  8. Elliott, as you know I been investing in .tv ever since they came out in 2000, so being in the .tv space for 12 years, I am glad I stuck with it, and the last 2 years have been amazing.

All I can tell you is that in the last 2 months, I sold Medico.tv and Eyecare.tv for $20K, sold another .tv for $50K (NDA), received an offer on another .tv for $140K, but looking for $250K on that, and get numerous offers on many other .tv. Also, almost all the buyers are outside of the United States, where .tv is more accepted and .com is not king.

I started buying .com is 1998, and even though .com has been very good for me, the ROI on .tv has been incredible, better than any other extension. Like any investment, all I care about is ROI, nothing more, nothing less, and IMO, .tv offers the best, but only if you have the right names. Also, the people who bash .tv, either don’t have good names, they think the domain industry revolves around the USA.

  9. let the numbers speak and no bullshit. a willing buyer. a willing seller. congrats to the parties involved.

.tv market been very healthy and its an opportunity. been that way since 2010. just like .com. no time to broker out other peoples deals on people i dont know or what there about. nor do i ever claim to be a broker. im climbing up the mountain and strongly urge others too. who cares what sold for what and focus on your own progress and your own names.

end of story. see you in another 2 years! every two years i will be assisting in deals.
