Summer Sunday Thoughts and Updates

It’s highly likely that I am on my bicycle right now while you read this. I am starting out at 6am and will probably finish at around noon. Luckily, my wife is super understanding (she runs the Boston Marathon on the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge Team), and she watches the kids while I do my training rides. The support from the domain industry means a great deal to me, and what keeps me going is thinking about kids who are helped by Dana-Farber’s Jimmy Fund. Seeing tweets like these drives me to keep fundraising and pedaling.

Here are some domain industry thoughts and updates for the weekend:

When I was starting out in the domain space, I read forum posts from John Berryhill that offered good insight about domain name legal issues. On a couple of occasions when I had a concern, I called John to ask for some advice. John never charged me for his time answering these questions. If John has helped you, I am sure he would appreciate your support as he is also riding in the Pan-Mass Challenge to raise funds for Dana-Farber. Even small donations show appreciation.

I think it would be great if DomainIQ or Whoisology allowed me to search by phone number. I occasionally get inquiries via phone, and it would be great to be able to search one of those domain tool websites to see if the caller is interested in a domain name rather than a robocaller. When I mentioned this on Twitter, someone mentioned TrueCaller, but I haven’t tried that service yet.

Not surprisingly, Rick Schwartz won the UDRP filed against Queen.com. I would not be surprised to aggressively go after the complainant to try and recover legal fees.

A company called Rinse raised $14 million in funding, according to TechCrunch. Smartly, it looks like the company has owned the exact match Rinse.com domain name for quite some time. Yes, great domain names are expensive, but I bet they founders are glad they own it.

I am debating whether or not to bring back the weekly brokerage listings. Readers love it, but it is annoying/sad to see people post terrible domain names for sale at ridiculous prices when the target audience is clearly other domain investors. Maybe I will give it a shot in a week or two.

Spitfire.com is coming up for auction on NameJet, and it already has a high bid of $21,000. Going to be interesting to see how high this one goes. It’s a great one word .com domain name, and there seem to be a lot of companies that would benefit from the upgrade.

  1. Domainers need to pivot their thoughts. Instead of buying just domains with the only intention of selling for profit, pick up some good ones that you intend to develop into income earning sites.

    It’s the age old dilemma of selling the chicken or just the eggs. And we all know the moral of that story. Don’t let your prized rooster cross the road and be run over by the capitalistic machine. Get that rooster roosting and tooting.

      Easier said than done. I would bet 95% of people who consider themselves “domainers” have real world jobs and other time commitments that would preclude them from building a business (or “income earning sites”). For most people who try to build “income earning sites,” they will end up spending time and resources and not get a positive ROI.

    • Lol. Doers do and dreamers dream. If you start out with the premise that it’s hard. That you will fail. That no one will love you. Ta-Da! You win at failing.

      Life is a self fulfilling prophecy. Besides, most people have miserable jobs that eat away at their souls and kill them a little everyday Their minds have already left the building but they don’t have the courage and stomach to take their bodies with them.

      One good site developed will make all your dreams come true and secure for yourself and your family the future you’ve always wanted.
