Stadia.com Acquired Before Google Announcement (Updated)

I saw a tweet from Techmeme with news about Google’s new game stream service called Stadia, which made me wonder if Google had acquired the brand match Stadia.com domain name in advance of the news:

The Stadia.com domain name sounded familiar to me, and when I visited Stadia.com, the domain name did not resolve to an active website. I searched my email for that domain name, and I see a DomainTools registrant alert from March 13 showing that the domain name changed registrants. Stadia.com is now registered to DNStination Inc., the Whois privacy service operated by MarkMonitor. Prior to that, the domain name was registered to an entity in Idaho.

The nameservers for Stadia.com googledomains.com nameservers. Despite not yet resolving, I believe it is highly likely that Google acquired the Stadia.com domain name prior to its branding announcement. I don’t know if it means anything or not, but it does not look like Google registered Stadia.Google. Since the company operates its .Google extension, Google does not need to worry about someone else registering it before they have a chance to do so.

Update: Stadia.com is now forwarding to a page within Google’s Store website, so it looks like the domain name acquisition is confirmed.

  1. A company the size of Google should have defensively registered Stadia.game which is now parked for sale with a QQ contact, presumably indicating a registrant in China.
