ShipYourEnemiesGlitter.com: At What Price Will it Sell?

You’ve probably already read the story about ShipYourEnemiesGlitter.com. In case you haven’t had the opportunity, Gizmodo has a pretty good article about the website.

ShipYourEnemiesGlitter.com was listed for sale at Flippa last week. Quite a coup for the company to land a listing like this, which has received a tremendous amount of publicity. At the present time, the high bid is $70,100 with 5 bids pending and 333 bids submitted. As of the publication of this article, there are 4 days remaining in this auction that has met its reserve price already.

I am curious what you think the sale price will be when the auction ends. I posted a poll for you to vote. Your comments are welcome.

  1. Flippa is whoring out this sale, and changing their own internal rules for it.

They have awarded the seller Super Seller status, sort of like eBay feedback of a shooting star, even though this seller has never completed any transaction on Flippa. False sense of security, the seller is absent from the thread, the site is not taking orders, the 5 bids have to be all bid at $70K plus, Flippa has no authorization policy much like namejet capping unauthorized bidders at $2,500.

Amazing example of the power of the Internet, of how a simple idea, and a few hundred dollars, can yield bids close to 6 figures.

  2. Am I missing something , Elliot ? I just don’t get it. I regularly sell on Flippa , so I’ve been watching the listing since it was posted.
This is a “Fifteen Minute Fad ” , not a sustainable business. Why would someone pay $70K-plus for a “business” that has a 2-3 month “hot” shelf life at best ?
Further adding to my bewilderment as to why someone would waste $70K-plus on this site is the fact that the site is currently shut down pending new ownership , all the while the imitators are shipping glitter at a lower price ?
From an investment standpoint , the $70K-plus would be better spent on a few high-end domain names. That’s a more sound investment than a “Fifteen Minute Fad” that’s already being undercut by imitators. But that’s just my opinion.

    • I don’t really get it either, but I presume someone could run with all this publicity and make their money back + more before this subsides.

I presume there will be another round of publicity after the auction and maybe upon the relaunch.

  3. I think the domain has significant value now based on how viral the site went and how quickly. I don’t know if it will make back the investment, and 10K+ envelopes of glitter is a lot to ship to make $100K, but I can see the price ending around there.

I agree with the above comments that Flippa shouldn’t have awarded “Super Seller” status unless they just want to change the requirements to something like: Flippa Super Sellers are sellers that have the potential to make Flippa a lot of money.

As of now, you can find the description of a Super Seller here: https://flippa.com/supersellers

    From the page:
    What Makes a seller “Super”?
    They represent their wares honestly
They provide fantastic buyer support through the transaction and transfer process, and post-sale
They sell a product that their buyers are happy with
They consistently abide by Flippa’s Site Rules

One note on the Super Seller program: as a Flippa Super Seller myself, unless I am missing something, the tag seems pretty much meaningless at the moment because they have taken away all perks other than having the green “S” icon next your user name on the sales page. Super Sellers used to receive priority status in search results, which was quite valuable.

    • What are the requirements of a Super Seller?

To become Super, sellers need to have demonstrated:

A stellar history on Flippa over a period of time
      A near perfect feedback rating
      A high volume of transactions

The application process takes some time and not everyone is accepted. If a Super Seller’s squeaky clean record is tarnished in any way, they’ll be removed from the program should they no longer meet the criteria.

    • @Josh

There are marketing guys online, that can take that traffic, and convert it to $, maybe not selling glitter, but other wares.

  4. This domain/website has incredible value, the backlinks and exposure will ensure they remain as the top dog in the mail enemy glitter niche. I personally dont really think Kevin Fink owes any explanation. This auction is putting Flippa on the worldwide map, of course the auction and seller should be given Super Seller status! My question to Kevin would be how many hits has the auction recieved, as it is likely a World Record! So thats the next thing to come out of this, a Guiness Book World Record for most views for an Online Web Property auction. What we are witnessing is an MBA style marketing lesson! The timing of this seems very planned, with both Flippa and the seller being from Australia and this auction taking place during the Massive Affiliate Summit event. With 5000+ Internet Marketers in attendance, this will be hot topic!

  5. will sell for $100,000+ to a non-paying bidder who will waste the sellers time…

seller will try to collect funds arguing back and forth wasting 2 weeks…

website traffic will start slowly dying down…

unable to collect funds from the highest non-paying bidder, flippa will award the site to the second highest bidder…(3rd week)

second highest bidder will ask questions and waste another week and decide not to buy (4th week)

after a month and no deal, seller will get pissed off and ship glitter to all flippa employees!!!

  6. @Ron

If you know marketing guys who can take a small and short lived fad and use the traffic else where to make 6 figures in that time, plus because after all we need a profit…I believe you.

This story is no different from any other, yes money can be made on fads, no doubt but when you are paying developed land prices on farm land, you are in for a lesson.

    • @Josh

      Isn’t that called GTLD x 365 days a year

Yes, there are marketing guru’s out there that can put a spin on this, and are drooling over this site as it sits dormant doing nothing, while it continues to be talked about.

I subscribed to the flippa page, and it has been a non stop barrage of people leaving comments.

If you guys look at the top bidders they have done $50K or more in transactions at flippa, I am sure flippa is going to make sure they know what they are bidding on, and will follow thru.

Even at $70K it is insane in most of our eyes, but people pay millions for marketing daily, so it is a marketing play, not a glitter play at this point, you can check Mike’s comments above, he seems well versed in the affiliate industry.

  7. Let’s be serious for a while … that guy has created a lot of hype on purpose to sell for big bucks a junk domain with an underlying basically non-existent business …
yeah, maybe you can make some money from the short-lived traffic, without never recovering what you paid for it … and then? …

It’s a typical pump-and-dump scheme … and Flippa is giving him a hand, acting unprofessionally, for the fees …
Some fool’s money will be burned … lol 😀

  8. I saw the site listing on Flippa since day 1 and to be honest, I wouldn’t throw $10k on that, let alone +$70k.

While I agree with some of the comments that say that the new buyer will be able to profit in the long run with the media coverage it has attracted (plus backlinks) I wouldn’t buy it for a couple of reasons.

    1) The idea itself can be replicated without any costs at all, I saw some guys using Tumblr and they already had like 50+ orders

    2) To me its just like a burn and churn type of site, where I doubt its profitability after 6-12 months

    3) With $70k, you can start another similar copycat website, get almost the same media attention and even rank above the said guy (that’s what blackhatters have started doing)

Exactly as Andrea said above me, “Some fool’s money will be burned”

  9. Jumping on that bandwagon here with post postmyenemiesglitter.com (best left) I think they’re poor domains but if they make money then who cares

  10. When this name is sold, who then will take glitter from various enemies and ship it to (places so far unknown), if anyone. The buyer may decide to simply speculate the name and do nothing with the enemies’ glitter.

What sort of glitter is it anyway? Is it bling?

Kilroy: all that glisters is not gold

  11. Thanks, Elliot, for bringing the comments to my attention.

First off, in reference to the seller being absent from the thread: our Websites Account Manager is handling this sale on behalf of the seller. Things, as you could imagine, have gotten quite big — so he’s stepped aside and asked us to officiate. All bids have since been verified.

As for the Super Seller Status — it was a placeholder to signify to the thousands of new eyeballs navigating towards the listing that this was indeed a trusted seller. Again, working with our Websites team, this seller and his asset were proven legitimate – such that our team took to managing the influx of hundreds of bids (since verified, one by one).

Since these comments have gone live, the Super Seller logo has shifted to a Verified Seller check-mark. I personally hope we can use this in the future for not only verified sellers, but buyers alike. Feel free to followup with us on this.

We are unaffiliated with the high bidder except to say that s/he is verified, has done business with us before, and is in fact bidding on this for his/her own acquisition purposes.

Anything else you need, please reach out to Help@Flippa, or to me directly via Domains@Flippa

Thanks again, Elliot, for the coverage and chance to be involved in the dialogue…

  12. “With $70k, you can start another similar copycat website, get almost the same media attention and even rank above the said guy (that’s what blackhatters have started doing)”

…not easy to replicate media attention…maybe overpriced but whoever is buying may be able to make their investment back…hard to say – will watch for sure. Can be copied but the clone will not get much attention…similar to the guy selling picels years back…fad…although I hate the site (not the idea) because the owner uses way too much profanity…does not offend me…just seems childish
