Saturday Update – USA USA USA .XXX

Much like most of you I assume, I am going to be watching the US soccer team today as they play Ghana in the World Cup. I played soccer for many years, and it’s amazing to see World Cup fever hit the US. I am sure it won’t last much beyond the end of the World Cup.

On to some updates:

  • People frequently ask me what types of domain names I’ve been selling lately. Over the past two months, I’ve sold a number of city .com domain names of all sizes. I am working on small margins on most of the names, but they aren’t names I would get a chance to develop, so it’s better to sell them.
  • I am away for the weekend in Cape Cod, and we passed through a number of nice towns like Mashpee, Abington, Weymouth and a few others. I also ran in the Harwich 5k this morning. Some of the geodomain names I sold in the last 2 months include Mashpee.com, Abington.com, Weymouth.com and Harwich.com.   I am keeping (and re-developing) Newburyport.com!
  • I think .XXX   is going to be very telling when it comes to gTLDs. I know it’s not just for adult sites to use, but I can’t see many others using them. The adult industry has always been at the forefront of technological advancements, and it’s going to take a strong marketing effort to get people to learn about .XXX and to adopt. I think a lot of other gTLD registries should pay close attention to how .XXX is marketed and adopted. Sure, .XXX isn’t really “needed,” but the same can probably said about any future gTLD that is introduced.

  1. Funny thing about the World Cup is my wife who is Colombian is more excited about the US soccer matches than I am. I’m more a fan of SEC football and ACC basketball.

Yes, I am trying to renew a few .com/.net domains before the price increase.

Thanks for continuing to share your insights on the industry.

Regarding .xxx I believe it could take some market share from .TV for adult names. Of course most domainers don’t think much of .TV 🙂 anyway.

Regarding domain sales I received notification yesterday of a personal record sale (tie) – it was a two-word alt TLD domain so there are still buyers out there. However, given I have had two SEDO transactions cancelled this year because the buyer didn’t pay, I’ll wait to announce which domain until the transaction clears.

    Go USA!

  2. .xxx will not impact .tv for adult what so ever.. adult industry is being impacted heavily .com, .net, .wtf, whatever

    congrats elliot in geo sales..

  3. @Leonard,

I think the domain industry is making a big deal in the .com & .net renewals. The price increases are not worth the money to renew now.

I use a coupon website to receive cashback on all my Go Daddy purchases. It has worked for me. If I knew about the coupon website back in Jan, I would have avoided signing up for a domain membership to get the best deals.

I wrote an article on how to offset the increases. The .xxx seem to only be credible in the adult industry. I read another blog on how the .xxx can be used to promote commercial products and services beyond the adult industry.

    Congratulations on your pending sale.

The US will need a mighty effort to win the game. It doesn’t look good so far in the extra session.

  4. I hope you do re-develop Newburyport.com. I live in Newburyport and remember asking if that domain was for sale about 5 years ago, and was told “it’s going to be developed, it’s not for sale”. 🙁

There is so much you could do with that domain, especially now that summer is here and tourists are coming to Newburyport in droves.

I’ll keep an eye out and see what you end up doing with it.

  5. Congrats on the city.com sales!

I’m curious- are you primarily selling to those domains to domainers or to end users?

If end users, what kind of sites are you targeting to offer them the domain for sale?

    Thanks,

    Ellen
