Report: Elon Musk Acquires BoringCompany.com via HugeDomains

In December, serial entrepreneur Elon Musk tweeted about starting a tunnel boring company to potentially create a remedy to bad traffic. When Musk tweets something, others listen and TechCrunch even published an article about Musk’s tweet back in December.

According to a report published in Bloomberg, it looks like Musk has followed through with this tweet and is in the process of starting a literal boring company. The article states that “Within days of his tweetstorm, he acquired a domain name—BoringCompany.com—and appointed a leader for the project.”

The current Whois information for BoringCompany.com is private (via GoDaddy privacy proxy)  and there is a generic GoDaddy landing page showing.  I am not sure how this domain name acquisition was confirmed as I can not independently confirm the current ownership information.

In doing a DomainTools Historical Whois Search, I was able to see that his domain name had been owned by HugeDomains up until it went private on December 20, 2016. A screenshot via Screenshots.com from May of 2015 shows that the asking price for BoringCompany.com was $1,695. In March of 2016, the price of the domain name was listed at $2,195 according to Archive.org. It is unclear what Musk paid to acquire the domain name, although I would guess he paid the listed price. I will reach out to the owners of HugeDomains to see if they can comment, although they seem  to keep their sale information private.

HugeDomains owns a very large portfolio of domain names. The company seems to have a great handle on what domain names prospective buyers will want to buy, and their pricing seems to be in the sweet spot for small business acquisitions. It will be interesting to see if Musk’s plans for his [B]oring [C]ompany come to fruition.

  1. I’ve gotten rid of the better part of 1,000 domains to trim the flock in recent years and it seems HugeDomains catches quite a lot of my drops.

  2. This is your brain on no drugs. Musk wants to create a underground highway. I spent the entire 90’s and 2000’s doing laps around the beltway at night and logged over 800,000 miles. I certainly wouldn’t expect anyone in the future to spend their 20’s and 30’s beneath the surface of the Earth.

Based on his statement above, I think he needs to burn a few brain cells.

Ralph Lauren’s greatest fear is that Elon will introduce his own fragrance
to compete with Polo and call it Musk.

    • Thought if I could come up with an idea as absurd Elon launching Musk that perhaps taking your hands off the steering wheel would begin to seem like a normal idea, nope taking your hands off the steering wheel, your eyes off the road and will always be a grave situation.

  3. I’ll race Elon Musk around the Capital Beltway in a 1991 Honda CRX and he can either run his Tesla on autopilot or dig a tunnel under Washington and see if he gets to Baltimore before I do.
