Predictions for the Future Trend Domain Auctionâ„¢

I saw the list of domain names and prices for Stephen Douglas’ Future Trend Domain Auctionâ„¢ which will be held on Snapnames from August 24, 2011 at noon through August 30, 2011 at 3:15pm EST. I am not a big fan of buying or registering any type of “trend” domain names, but I believe many people do buy these names with the hopes of striking it rich.

The list of domain names and reserve prices are listed below, and further below is a poll question asking how you think this auction will perform. I understand Stephen and the domain owners will be heavily marketing and advertising these domain names to companies that may be interested in making a purchase, so perhaps end user participation will help propel this auction.

You can learn more about the auction at Snapnames.

  1. Wish I knew about this. I would have put this in:

    3danime.co
    3dcartooning.com
    3dcasinogame.de
    3dgta.com
    3dhdtvs.co
    3dhdvideogames.com
    3dlenses.co
    3dopticallens.com
    3dphotocopy.com
    3dtvproducer.com
    3dtvproducers.com
    3dvideogamer.co.uk
    3dvideomeetings.com

  2. Out of the over 2000 domains submitted, this is what they “hand picked”..? seems to me like “someone” is pushing a lot of their own inventory…

    – is WorldCupDetails.com really a FTD?? a trademark FTD?

  3. @ ze

You’re right on the money. That’s precisely what I suspected would happen, because it always seems to happen; and why I didn’t bother to submit any names (even though I own the largest “Hologram” dot-com portfolio in existence).

I do hope that it’s successful for everyone’s sake, but the names ‘selected’ are clearly not the best they could offer.

  4. Stephen Douglas seems to be very nice and intelligent guy but I just don’t see this auction doing anything. All I can say is…I was going to do a story on this but felt I was being much too negative.

  5. I’m hopeful of my entry: 3DDesignSoftware. Maybe it appears longtail, but it actually has some [1300] Exact US searches, and approximate CPC of over $3.00.

It probably is one of my most valuable dot coms, and I’ll develop it concurrent with the auction, because I am not depending on selling it.

  6. Each name, worth arounf 50 to 100 bucks. Some maybe around $200. Very poor quality names. Anything with a number in it is worth very little to me.

  7. OceanTurbine.com $10,001 – $25,000
    RobotSupplies.net $1001 – $2500

    oceanturbines.net
    and
    RobotSupply.net

    ..are available right now.

I’m sure there are others as well.

  8. One thing for sure I know, you remember those “OLD” vinyl records that you think are old…well they are coming back strong and the demand is so high.

I know because I have many offers on my domain recordlp.com

and I have many old Beatles records too.

  9. The names are mostly rubbish, I expect the sell rate to be in low single figures. These are the type of names where there is a lot of people on the “sell” and very few on the “buy” side. Not sure what snapnames was thinking when they thought the auction would be a good idea.

  10. 3dCellPhone.net $501 – $1000
    3dCellPhones.net $501-1000

3d phones are just hitting the market making these 2 domains a bargain imo.

  11. I am all for “future trends”, but most of these names are garbage with ridiculous reserves.

When domains like OrangeJuice.com, and HealthCare.net are selling for under $50K, why would anyone buy these domains for tens of thousands?

    Brad

  12. I am not sure how WorldCupDetails.com is a “future trend”, but, it appears to be available to hand reg –

    “No match for domain “WORLDCUPDETAILS.COM”.
    >>> Last update of whois database: Sun, 14 Aug 2011 03:24:36 UTC <<<"

    Brad

  13. @L S Morgan… Right? Thank you. I should do something with it as I do love vinyl, really. My company name was Vinyl Grooves for 15 years. I mainly sold vinyl, memorabilia and music stuff. I recently shortened it to Vgrooves since I am working more with online virtual, viral, visual, video stuff now – mostly I work with “trendy stuff” that starts with “V”, lol…

In all seriousness though and on the trend tip. I am an old dot commer that usually keeps to myself but WTF – I think I am “trending”. Over the last 10 years I have acquired and sold domains like highperformance.com, jobinterview.com, flushots.com, norx.com, etc. I am sure I haven’t “trended” much before. But now, I must confess, I think I have been “future trending” in .tv’s this year: tube.tv, society.tv, moviestar.tv, rockstar.tv, comedian.tv, audition.tv, oops.tv, tip.tv, topic.tv, browse.tv, chatroom.tv, debut.tv, rafting.tv, mob.tv, mojo.tv… I have been getting stuff like that for what seems like bargains and since I have turned down consideraly more in offers on these .tv’s in the last few months than I paid for them and I got the first one in january it is making me want to trend more. I have sold a few but now I am mostly thinking about keeping the ones I have and developing them into “V” sites – and getting more…

I have never reg’d a .biz, .mobi, .info, .etc. I did get a few one word .us’s in ’02 and a very few .co’s last year that I sold but other than that I don’t think I have ever “trended” before and it is a little unnerving. I didn’t get any blog domains, I didn’t get any tube domains (until tube.tv), I didn’t get any cloud domains. Am I trending now???

  14. There are some neat scripts out there that allow you to scrape and catalog ebay auction results.

Check out PriceCharting dot com, which has the classic video game market nailed down.

I could totally see something like this working for vinyl. You could crowdsource the DB entries allowing users to enter any title that wasn’t already in the DB, which would then start tracking that entry. Over time, it would probably evolve into a pretty comprehensive, interactive DB that could be integrated with EPN buttons so they could click through to examine the auctions, with your cookie getting the commission.

  15. Oh, and cash-machine city; if you SEO the pages, you’d start conquering the SERP for a lot of album titles that have essentially no meaningful keyword competition, but are still searched by people looking to buy. Over time, as thousands of titles became tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, and all those pages got indexed, that’s a LOT of lines in the Google water and a lot of people clicking through with their wallets open.

  16. It will be interesting to watch the results…I figured something was in the air related to “3d” I’ve been getting more requests for those in the DG postings than any other search term for the past 5 weeks…

Above someone posted about a tool to gather info from eBay… What tool is that — post or eMail me (thx in advance)

    ~Patricia – Ohio USA – DomainBELL

  17. Forget 3D… The next ‘big’ thing coming for gamers is ‘haptics! (Greek for ‘touch)…. With Disney’s latest Surround Haptics technology, this will change the future of feeling reality.
Perhaps I should have listed SurroundTouch.com in the Future Trend Domain Auction.
    Oh well…

  18. “Not sure what snapnames was thinking when they thought the auction would be a good idea.”

    @ Snoopy

They only have upside, IMO. It costs them very little to upload the names, and if they aren’t responsible for marketing, they will get commission on whatever sells but have no real costs associated with holding the auction. I believe just about anyone can set up their own auction on Snapnames.

  19. I own following and I’m not very proud. I’m planning on getting rid of these at any cost before they come up for renewal.

    3DEAST.COM
    3DMOVIESTREAM.COM
    3DTABLETAPP.COM
    3DTABLETAPPS.COM
    3DTVAUSTRALIA.COM

  20. I’ve been holding onto

    VisitSaintMartin.com

    and

    VisitnSaintVincent.com

and am looking to sell them but am not sure how much I should ask. Any ideas?

  21. In my opinion my (3) character domain name 3DV is a better bet to put your money on than many of those domain names that have been listed for the SnapNames auction.

  22. @L S Morgan

Really nice advice. I appreciate it. I am looking into all you mentioned. I am so immersed in a few other development projects that just keep get bigger and more complicated but I think I see a train (I mean a light) at the end of the tunnel, lol. We should talk???

    @Alex

I agree. 3DV.com is better IMO than all the other domains in this auction combined. I know there is almost no comparison here but I have been dabbling in .tv’s lately and I got 3DX.tv a month ago at an expiring auction for $45 and just sold it for $275 (still in escrow, jinx?) which motivated me to grab 3DV.tv for $10 when it expired last week. I know it is not .com but nothing wrong with turning and burning and keeping the cash flow going. I immediately got a $100 offer on 3DV.tv when the whois showed up but I think I will hold out for a bit more.

  23. Yes..I wish I knew about this too..too late..too soon, however, I believe in the future power of the ‘cloud’ and that my cloud domains would be of interest somewhere to someone..

    cloud.com.ag
    cloudcasinos.org
    bankoncloud.com
    clouddegree.org
    cloudforce.mobi
    cloudglobal.info
    cloudpeople.me
    cloudnanotech.com
    cloudsecurity.mx
    cloudsolar.org
    cloudtax.org
Thanks..and good luck to all auction domainers!
