.Org TM – Not Related to Domain Names

Nat Cohen noticed an interesting trademark when looking at a cutlery tray organizer his wife bought. As you can see in the top left hand corner of the packaging, there is a TM symbol next to the .ORG logo.

I did a search on Trademarkia.com, and it looks like the trademark was registered earlier this month (on August 8). I am not all that knowledgable about trademarks, but I think this company’s mark is related more to the design than .org. Since the company’s url is not on the packaging, I did a Google search, but I could not find the company’s website to see if it actually uses a .org domain name.

As you might imagine, the Public Interest Registry (PIR), the organization that operates the .org domain registry, also has a trademark involving .org.

It was interesting to me to see a trademark like this that has nothing to do with domain names.

  1. Interesting.

The trademark is for “.ORG Well…Organized” as seen at http://tsdr.uspto.gov/#caseNumber=86246163&caseType=SERIAL_NO&searchType=statusSearch

    Per their application:

The mark consists of the phrase “.ORG” with a small part of the “O” cut out on the first line and the words “WELL…ORGANIZED” on the second line with a line between them.

I would not call the “dot” to be a cut off the letter “O” however. The tm owner is none other than Bed Bath & Beyond.
