Now You Can Agree or Disagree

At the end of July, I announced some big changes to the comment section of my blog, and it seems that the changes were all generally well received… well, nobody mentioned that they hate them, so I assume they were pretty much well received. More importantly, I think the comment section makes it easier to have a discussion, which helps to enhance the articles.

Yesterday evening, I made one more noticable change to the comment section, and I hope you like (and will use) it. I have added “Agree” and “Disagree” links to each comment that is received. If you choose, you can click on the agree or disagree link, and the total number of other visitors who agreed or disagreed with the comment will be listed.

Although I wish everyone who reads my blog would comment (and comment more regularly), I think this feature will allow people to participate more passively.I hope this passive participation leads to more active participation.

What do you think about this new feature?

  1. It’s a cool little feature, if a little visually distracting to see it on short follow-up comments. My first thought is, “who’s agreeing?” (thanks to Facebook conditioning), but I’m sure I’ll get used to this. I get that it’s a quick way for people to passively involved, but I’m not sure how necessary it is. I can imagine how many “disagrees” comments with crappy names will get in the “names wanted” posts.

    • There have been a number of times I’ve read something on another blog and wanted to give my opinion but not get involved. This little feature will allow people to participate anonymously and passively.

If it’s not beneficial or it takes away from commenting in the future, it’s easy to turn off, but I wanted to try it out 🙂

  2. I think this feature is a fantastic idea.

Just in case you care, for me at least, the reason I’ve drastically cut back on commenting on all blogs is what has happened to the commentary on the blogs over about the last 2 years. I don’t think I need to elaborate, you’ve been around long enough to know what I mean.

I do think that recently across all the blogs comment sections have been improving but still far from the level things used to be.

If I do comment I will rarely select to recieve notifications anymore.

This is just my opinion at least. Censorship is a tough issue.

    • I like the thumbs up or thumbs down icons……

The blue and red lettering is too bold and overpowers your “Elliot’sBlog” light grey logo which I mentioned in a past post was too light to begin with….

  3. It doesn’t hurt to have, however it’s more useful as a rating feature e.g. to move more popular comments to the top. Unless a post has 100+ comments it’s a bit unnecessary.

  4. Looks like it’s being used to effect 🙂
    I agree.

Can I ask, did you add an HTML snippet or use other coding ?

I like the various ratings used online, as long as it’s simple to use, as yours is, then it should aid in participating.

    Best, Howard.
