New Unsolicited Emails Received

I bought a domain name this morning at Moniker, and this evening I received the unsolicited email below. It’s kinda crazy that they are sending out these emails the same day as the domain registration. I wonder how many people are getting the same crap.

Ironically, I got a similar email last week under similar circumstances.  See that one below for something interesting I noticed.  Who else is getting these emails?

Subject: xxxxxxx.com purchase

I noticed you just bought xxxxxxxxxxx.com.

Our statistics indicate that your domain’s primary keyword phrase, ‘xxxxxx xxxxxx’, gets around x exact local searches per month and x exact global searches per month. We have many similar domain names available that get a lot more monthly searches and will bring you a lot more traffic.

Here is our list of domains about xxxxxx xxxxxx.

We also have a daily premium domain drop list.

We can also help you with developing your domains, hosting your websites, and getting your sites to rank high in the search engines.

Now have a look at the previous email that I received last week. Notice the bolded segment, which seems to have been removed, perhaps because of the legal intervention from my registrar.

  1. I just received the same email after hand registering a domain at GoDaddy.

The version I received didn’t include this line “from one of our partner registrars.”

I’d be curious as to how they’re getting email addresses so quickly. I didn’t realize the whois db was updated that quickly.

One thing that makes me laugh – they use exact match data in the email, but when you click through they show broad match data for the domains they’re trying to sell.

The GoDaddy lawyers will be on ’em in now time.

  2. Same here exactly the same after free reg @ godaddy.

Maybe its godady company seen as they are the kings of upselling already.

  3. Must be Verisign selling the info., because my hand -reg at Moniker got the same email, minus “Registrar partners.”

Elliot, do you like, SmithtownJobs.com , pop 115,715? Just registered it! You can have it. I’ll push it to your account.

I can ask on this thread, because it isn’t on the main thread!

  4. I think they harvest emails from using yesterday’s drop lists and checking the whois of domains that are no longer available today. Godaddy make stacks of cash, and I know they are quite grubby in business – but I doubt they sell hot email addys to in yer face spammers so blatantly. The only way to avoid this is to use your spam email account on the whois.

  5. Does anyone know why freshdrop is broke? Maybe its a good thing because the last few days Ive hand regged some good domains that will be easy to develop into sites that make profit, big or small.
Usually the better ones I see are already gone by the time I make it across all the godaddy shopping cart hurdles without inadvertantly signing up for some tripe I dont want or need lol.

  6. I just got a bunch of these spam emails after registering domains from godaddy. I searched to see if other people are getting them too. That’s how I found this page. I knew about your blog from before. My question is where are they getting the data for “your domain gets : xyz local and xyz global searches”? You can look this up by hand but these guys are sending automated emails..so they must have database access to search data. What are they using?

  7. “Must be Verisign selling the info.”

    Louise,

Maybe so but there are sites out there that list daily new registrations.

    Example:
DailyChanges.com tracks the “Top 287 most active Name Servers”
by date and lists all the New Regges, Transfers In, Transfers Out, Deletions, etc..

The first 50 results are shown per list and the entire list can be downloaded.

Another one, Domain-Daily.com shows all the newly regged domains by date (24 hour delay) and extension.

And there are others I’m sure.

They may even have their own in-house script.

  8. I emailed both the eNom and NameCheap (inline.me & adddomainnames.com registrars) abuse departments about this. We’ll see if there’s any outcome from it.
