Nashua Telegraph Gets It

Subscribe to Elliot's BlogLeave it to the parent company of my hometown newspaper, The Nashua Telegraph, to really get the importance of domain names. I just noticed that they own and operate NH.com, the guide to New Hampshire. Unfortunately, they can’t buy Nashua.com, as it’s owned by publicly traded Nashua Corporation and they won’t sell it (well, I offered 6 figures to their CFO over the phone and he said they wouldn’t sell).
Nevertheless, The Telegraph and its parent company own the premier online portal for New Hampshire. NH.com is easy to remember, easy to navigate to, and it just makes sense for a New Hampshire-based publishing company to own. When publishing companies like The Tribune Company are filing for bankruptcy and other newspaper publishers are distressed, The Telegraph and its parent company will be rewarded for thinking ahead.
I bought Lowell.com and Burbank.com not only because they will become the leading guides to these cities, but I can also expand to providing news. They might not consider these sites competition now, but in a few years, who knows..   Some newspaper companies thought ahead, and others didn’t (ironically, the Burbank newspaper is owned by The Tribune Company).

  1. It was a shock to hear the Tribune filed for Bankruptcy only a year after it was taken private. Apparently with $13Bil of Debt!!!
They own some awesome domain generic and geo – Im very interested to see who starts trying to snap these up on the cheap.
As the Nashua Telegraph buying NH.com this is great news to see another company finally getting the power of owning a GREAT domain!
I think that you might get some good cheap freelance writers for Burbank & Lowell to provide news for your website Elliot -I think thats a good way forward for you to go.
    Regards,
    Robbie

  2. I am interested in the 6 figure offer for Nashua.com. It does not strike me as a premium name.
But I have also noticed that it is much easier to sell advertising when you can meet face to face. Did that factor into the offer?

It’s my home town with 90,000 people. To me it was worth 6 figures because I know many business owners. I didn’t give them an exact number, but asked the CFO if they would sell, he said no, and I said I would be able to offer 6 figures and he said no again. This was much earlier in the year when the market was better.

  3. it’s nice to announce to everyone that you are able to bid 6 figs on name – well done – i think name dropping would be a logical next step – i.e., you dated paula abdul during your days as a bachelor.

    Love the sarcasm – always…
PS: I don’t think it’s breaking news that I am able to bid this considering the portfolio of names I’ve acquired in the past few months.

  4. With 6 figures firmly in mind, I wish you were a jazz lover, because I have a boatload of jazz names to sell…..
    ***UPDATED BY ELLIOT***
I am a jazz lover… Monk, Coltrane, Bird, Miles, Dizzy, Brecker, Marsalis…etc. History of Jazz was my favorite course in college (ironically out of my major). We have some great jazz spots here in the city – Lincoln Center Jazz a few blocks away, Village Vanguard, Birdland…etc.
However, the 6 figure offer was discussed when times were better and prior to a couple of other large purchases.
