My Business Goals for 2017

With  the year drawing to a close, now is when I spend time making sure I have things in order before the new year begins. Goal setting is something I do, although I am not really hard on myself if I don’t achieve my goals.

I thought I would share 10 business goals I am going to  set for myself for 2017. Some goals will be easier to accomplish than others, but I will try to accomplish all without compromising my family life.

The ultimate goal for me is to achieve a good life/work balance. I want to earn enough money so that finances are not a concern, but I don’t want to spend too much time away from my family in order to accomplish my goals.

I invite you to share your goals in the comment section. These are ten goals I have set for my business (not in any particular order and some may not be mutually exclusive):

  • Take a business trip to India, China, Singapore, or Hong Kong. There are quite a few domain name  and related industry conferences in this region, and I would like to make my first trip to the region this year.
  • Sell six figures worth of domain names on NameJet, Afternic, Sedo or other domain name marketplaces.
  • Purchase six figures worth of domain names on NameJet, Sedo, and Afternic.
  • Surpass my 2016 domain sales, both in terms of number of domain names, but more importantly, in terms of profit.
  • Publish three articles on DomainInvesting.com that are cited in Techmeme.
  • Bring on two new advertisers on DomainInvesting.com.
  • Acquire three exceptional  one word .com domain names that are as good or better than Travels.com, Stallion.com, Embrace.com, and a couple of others my company owns.
  • Meet at least three people in person that I have met or exchanged emails with but have not met face to face.
  • Raise more than $12,000 for my Pan Mass Challenge ride benefiting Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. This year I raised well over my $10,000 goal, and I would like to raise even more in 2017.
  • Organize one local domain investor meetup in Boston.

  1. 1. Start the year off selling a domain from my 75 domain portfolio in January.
    2. Purchase my first one-word generic keyword domain.
    3. Sell six figures worth of domains.
    4. Ignore the hype, and apply business fundamentals to domain investing.
    5. Read as much as possible about successful Internet companies.

  2. Please take that China trip and sell a couple of our .com pinyin names while you’re to pay for it! Happy Holidays to you and your family.

  3. Happy Holidays Elliot. Very interesting goals – and a nice diversity too. With my 25 years coaching/mentoring hat on, I would have just one comment.
You talk about “six figures worth….” in relation to two of them.
This gives you a range of $100,000 – $999,999; very very broad (too broad) in my experience to enable the optimum focus and strategic actions.
A goal of $200k would usually prompt a very different set of actions (and intensity) than one of $500k or even $900k.
You may want to nail your colours to the mast and decide on a very specific figure and then map your actions and motivation around that.
Very best wishes with them ALL Elliot – and hope it’s a lot of fun along the way too.
    Paul.

  4. I think you should include spending money at GoDaddy auctions 😉

I am open to working with you on a Boston domain investor meetup next year.

Hope to see you in a few weeks at namescon.
