Maca.com Sold for $150,000

Domain investor Garry Chernoff of NetIncome Ventures, Inc. sold Maca.com for $150,000. Based on the current Whois address, the buyer appears to be someone from China. Garry closed the deal via the DomainNameSales.com platform without the assistance of a domain broker.

A website on the Maca.com domain name is not currently resolving for me, so I can’t predict how the domain name will be used or why the buyer chose to spend $150k to acquire it. According to WebMD.com, “Maca is a plant that grows in central Peru in the high plateaus of the Andes mountains. It has been cultivated as a vegetable crop in Peru for at least 3000 years. Maca is a relative of the radish and has an odor similar to butterscotch. Its root is used to make medicine.” There are many websites that sell maca pills, maca powder, and other forms of maca.

Maca.com was originally registered in 2000. The earliest historical Whois record is from 2003, and it shows Β Garry’s company as the registrant. I am unsure if Garry was the original registrant or if he acquired the domain name sometime between 2000 and 2003.

$150,000 for Maca.com seems like a solid sale, especially during the slower Summer months. We will probably see it at the top of this week’s DN Journal sales report. At the moment, it would tie for the 40th largest publicly reported domain name sale of the year.

Update: Here’s what Garry told me this morning about when he acquired the domain name and for how much: “I actually picked it up in 2000 in an NSI drop
for $70
.” Outstanding.

  1. I own jiwi.com (and the matching twitter name). Although it is not a noun like maca, at least it is somewhat of a comparable for a CVCV.com name …. hopefully πŸ™‚

  2. Good sale. Congrats! I see the motivation to purchase this domain name based on its health reasons. I’m sure many bottles of Maca sell per month and/or maybe the owner is planning to use this name to develop another company. It is also a highly searched CVCV unlike some that lack value in previous sales reports.

  3. That’s great ROI. Congrats, Garry. Kind of gives me hope that domain investing is still viable–and those names that I registered back in the 1990s still have a chance at being sold one day. πŸ˜‰

  4. Buyer could be ιͺŠηŽ›δΊ§δΈšι›†ε›’ operating on Maca-china.net. According to the site, they account for 80% of Maca production in China and 60% in the world.
