VP of Marketing Karen Dixon Discusses Revamped BuyDomains Website

It’s an exciting day at NameMedia. Today we re-launched BuyDomains.com, our domain sales platform that was founded over ten years ago.  Our goal for the new site was to simplify the process of searching for and purchasing premium domain names, and to provide an ideal user experience and valuable resources that our small business customers rely on to make their domain investment decisions.

The new site is easy to navigate, and removes clutter while keeping important and relevant information that supports premium domain purchases front and center.  The shopping cart is streamlined and gets domains in the hands of customers faster.  We still have our world-class sales and service teams available to assist customers 24/7.

And we have more improvements on the way. Coming in the next release will be additional search filter options, the ability to download search results and a number of other features.

What does this mean for domain investors?  We’ve made it easier for end users to purchase your domains listed on Afternic, which are also displayed in BuyDomains search results.    Features like ‘Recently Sold’ domains help to support and justify the premium prices that aftermarket domains command.  Through our distribution network of over 100 partners worldwide, we are creating more awareness and demand for premium domains- both yours and ours.

BuyDomains is the third new site that NameMedia has released within 8 months.  We are committed to continuing to invest in our platforms for the benefit of both sellers and buyers of premium domain names.

  1. Stunningly cool site; I like it a lot, the functionality, feel, colors, the ladies ;-), and oh, some of the prices on the featured domains too, all good stuff.

    Congrats,

    to your continued success…

  2. I like the simplicity of the site. It is visually very pleasing but honestly its to simple and will lose lots of sales in my opinion. Love the pic of the girl. Really looks like she is opening her new business and standing in front of her new door.

    1. If I don’t know what type of name I am looking for then what do I type in the search. For example if I want a brand style name what would I type. Maybe put a category search placed under or around the search bar. Possibly switch out the wording “Enter Domain Name” and put “Enter keyword or phrase” Huge Domains has it like this and makes much more sense.
    2. If I do type a name into the search only 10 variations of that name appear on the next page. Should have minimum 25, 50, 100. 10 at a time with 2-3 seconds in between pages will make lots of customers go elsewhere looking for a name out of plain frustration.
    3. If I want to search for a name that is short and lets say less than 6 letters there is no way for me to do that.
    4. It only shows that I can exclude hyphens but I would like to exclude numbers also sometimes.
    5. On the first page I noticed that every time I go back to the home page you have a new set of names that have sold today. Instead of listing 5 I would try listing more it gives the cost of premium domains more credibility when you show more sales.
    6. The graphic under the words Premium Domains that has localbusiness.com, creditrate.com, and ewoofer.com doesn’t make sense to me and looks out of place especially the play masquerade masks next to Ewoofer.com ???
    7. The Just missed them section should be under the Make it your domain section.

Overall I really like it. Very modern and in touch with the times

    • Hi Todd,

Thanks for your feedback on the redesign. As Elliot said, we truly appreciate the time you take to send us your suggestions. We create our products for you, our customers, so it’s very important for us to hear what you want.

Great suggestion on the wording in the search box, and the number of results we return from a search, as well as from recently sold. We will consider these changes for future releases. Our next release will have the ability to filter by number of characters, include/exclude numbers and hyphens, and essentially have more options. Glad to hear that you like it.

Thanks and please continue to send us your ideas!

      Karen

  3. After seeing the mobile version I realize that this site is designed more user friendly for the mobile application but how many people really are going to search for such a crucial piece of their business through their phone and then drop between $2000-$5000 again through their phone. I don’t see that happening.

    • Hi Todd,

Our goal was to simplify the process for all users. We continue to see search traffic from mobile users climb, and with more and more end users browsing with tablets and smart phones, we needed to optimize their experience as well. Not all of our mobile users transact through their devices, however they are browsing and then calling our sales executives to complete their sales. It’s a growing and important channel for us that we wanted to address.

As always, thanks for the feedback!

      Karen Dixon

There’s a guy immortalized by history, for simply asking a similar question in the early nineteenth century; in that case, the gentleman, a radio buff, was questioning the wisdom of embracing television beyond extracurricular, fad thing…

Todd, I hope your comment on mobile surfing isn’t one of those.

    • @domenclature

As of right now only 25% of all searches are done on a mobile device and less than 15% of purchases are made through a mobile device. I am a firm believer that “Mobile” is the future BUT I did not make that comment against the Mobile market I made the comment against buying such a crucial piece of a business through a Mobile device. We are not buying a t shirt or TV. I just don’t see people searching, researching etc….for a domain name that is so important and actually making the purchase through their phone. I bet the amount of domains purchased through a mobile device is less than 5%. Its probably closer to 2%. When this type of purchase is made you want to be checking Google searches, Adwords, Twitter, other sites, etc……..so at times you can have 5 or 10 windows open at the same time doing research on one name that you want to purchase. You just can’t do that on a smartphone or tablet. Yes, make the mobile experience better but don’t make your entire site based around Mobile if your not selling T shirts.

I do understand where you are coming from. However, as we blog, many people are able to project, or modulate their internet, or web activities on their TV Screens; much like many people kept their land lines, and mobile lines for a brief period, before realizing that they can live without the land lines; or many people did not make large purchases, if any, on the web in early 2000’s due to fear of privacy or fraud, and now you can order your Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster online.

All the big wigs, from Google to your average Registrar is pushing mobile, it’s here. In a few years, even months, it could be the default standard.

  5. Hi Karen
While its nice to address and appease the assumptions of a few blog commenters who clearly know your business better than you, I think the most important thing is not what the peanut gallery thinks but what customers think viewed from the results. So how much better is this new design at converting viewers in to buyers? All these opinions on how good or bad it looks, how it focuaes on mobile, etc shouldn’t matter at all. Tell us it PERFORMS great. That’s all that matters
