JointVentures.com: What Would Be Your #1 “Draft” Pick?

Rick Schwartz and Danny Welsh held a “draft” of sorts on Rick’s blog yesterday for the brokers who are working with the JointVentures.com listed domain names. The way it worked was the twelve brokers picked their choice of domain names until each had a full roster of names they would then be tasked to find partners for joint ventures (leases, sales…etc).

It was a bit difficult to follow, but I spent a bit of time on Rick’s Blog yesterday watching the draft. I hadn’t really looked at the names all that much prior to the draft, but there are many really great names. I believe Rick also excluded some of the top names that will become available once these brokers create deals and show that they have what it takes to make deals happen.

In any case, as I followed along, I was surprised that some names were chosen so high and surprised at how low some names were selected. In total, 206 domain lots (a few had more than one name included) were selected by the brokers. You can see who selected what in a subsequent post today.

Since it’s a Sunday night and most of us are probably winding down gearing up for the new week, I thought it would be interesting to see what you guys would have chosen if you had the first pick in the draft. Feel free to post the domain name you would have selected. It doesn’t need to be the best or most valuable necessarily, but it should be the name you are confident you could find a company that woud be interested in a joint venture.

Listed below are the lots that were selected.

  1. My top choice would have been DivorceAttorneys.com because I think it’s a high value name and there are a whole lot of law firms that would love to own the name. In addition, if a law firm buyer couldn’t be found, there are a number of high end lead gen companies that could probably make hay with this domain name.

  2. I’m surprised you went with DivorceAttorneys after that GeoDivorce.com domain we had discussed a while back (sold for $2k btw).

Anyway I’d pick Spoons.com. Great domain. Obviously expensiveive. Can think of more viable buyers in the price range off hand than I can count on my fingers already and know there are a lot more than I can think of.

DivorceAttornies best part is huge buyer pool. Attornies and doctors are tough buyers though.

My 2nd Pick btw is Dispensaries.com. I think it may be best on the list IMO just not as “easy”. Definitely going to sell for 6 figs someday when the time is right. Been to Venice Beach lately? Crazy.

    • I don’t recall the name we discussed. However, I would MUCH rather own a field name (like DivorceAttorneys.com over a geo name like BostonAttorneys.com). There are far more potential buyers and development options.

      • Just looked in Gmail and found it (April 2012 – hence my forgetting).

I have owned a few Attorney / Lawyer / Attorneys / Lawyers names both in geo and in field, and the field names have always sold for more and much more quickly. I own a few geolegal names I’ve picked up here and there (mostly medium-sized areas), and they receive virtually no traffic nor do they get inquiries.

Interestingly, I have had worse luck selling legal names to lawyers than real estate names to Realtors šŸ™‚

    • Thank JP!
I love Spoons.com. I received it on a sale/trade a few years ago. I have been holding on to it waiting for the right program to come along. Many, many uses plus the obvious.
I am very fortunate Rick and Danny have taken the time to include it their program.
      Cheers!

  3. I have found from a few other names since then too that Attornies are easy to sell to but hard to sell for big money. The have a higher response rate than other verticals when reaching out to them, just lower offers. So that is good and bad.

DivorceAttornies.com is definitely nice. It’s a rare case too where the plural doesn’t have to be a directory because most Law Firms have many Attornies.

  4. My pick is Enlargement.com (Sold for $56,000 back in 2009). This could cover a few niches but in the right hands in a lucrative niche like ‘enlargement pills/devices’ this could be massive (pardon the pun).

  5. I really like CRMSoftware.com. This is a $40B annual business annually and leasing is part of their own sales model so I think they might be more easily receptive to the idea.

  6. I don’t think the draft results are worth diddly squat without lease asking prices stated.

There might be a name I would take first but the asking price is way to high so the probability of completing deal is too low and would draft the name.

Too many variables unknown to make an educated pick.

  7. HuntingEquipment.com – large, niche industry, great brandable name, lots of ecommerce opportunities with small to medium sized players makes the market for finding someone with a dream more realistic.

  8. Tuscany.com would be top of the list for me – awesome domain!

My next choice would be IrishWhiskey.com. I’ve got about 150 whisky/whiskey domains and a number of active whisky sites – so it’s an area I’m very familiar with.

My focus is on gourmet food, liquor and travel – so those two stuck out for me.

There are some great domains on the list.

  9. The whole leasing model is a house built of sand. Watch as this fiasco of a venture crumbles within a year.

I’m already preparing the popcorn for the final spectacular implosion.

    • I do agree with you on this point.

This entire leasing model is actually promoted by a person named Rick. According to him .COM is the king of extensions and common people usually go to the .COM version of the name. This is also called Type-In traffic.

As the browsers are becoming more advanced Type-In traffic is bound to go down. I really don’t remember the last time i had actually typed the web address into the address bar. I usually visit websites via stored bookmarks. Firefox’s inbuilt search tool will suggest me the already visited just after typing in the first character. Not only this the drop down box usually stores the top 10 visited websites for quick access and it will become more advance with time.

This means at the end of the day the only thing matters is the content on the website. Why would a company pay thousands of dollar per month to the domain owner and side by side developing content and backlinks for the same. This is definitely ridiculous. Rick usually compares this with actual world real estate but in reality it quite different. Not everybody can afford commercial real estate but a new internet venture can definitely buy a 10$ .COM or any other extension by doing slight modification and thereby saving them thousands of dollar. At least they have the name.

In the end everything that matters is higher SERP ranking and for that Google prefers content not the DOMAIN. An expert content writer can easily topple any of the top names mentioned above in the Google search ranking with his own random xyz domain.

CONTENT IS THE KING NOT .COM

      Thanks
      šŸ™‚
(Pardon me for any grammatical error)

    • How are browsers becoming more advanced? Googles search results change by the day. Its a gamble to find what you actually search for.

If content is king..then you personally put your money Where your mouth is and build your business on a .ws….us…biz..heck build it on .net….or .co…me or any of the gtld’s coming out. The person with the .com name, has, and will always have the advantage over you.

in your analogy…instead of buying the building on Main street…you bought the building on an unknown one way street and paid $$$$$$$ for signs and billboards all around town with hopes of luring traffic to your building that no one can find.

      Good luck.

      • Just install the Firefox 9 and latest Firefox version. You will see the difference.

I will prefer cctld over .com and i am doing pretty well with it and does not have to pay $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to the .com owner.

“in your analogyā€¦instead of buying the building on Main streetā€¦you bought the building on an unknown one way street and paid $$$$$$$ for signs and billboards all around town with hopes of luring traffic to your building that no one can find.”

Your argument is valid only only for organizations with huge cash reserves but what about new ventures. Should they deplete their fund by paying massive lease fees to the domain owner and side by side developing his domain also?
If you prefer to do that then you are free to pay $$$$$ for nothing.

  10. Someone mentioned before that without the prices this question was moot, however I think it is more a case of not knowing how much type in traffic each domain gets makes the question tougher.

    That said –

    CRM Software
    Forex Training
    SEO Consultant

would be my ONE pick, sorry Elliot I know couldnt help myself. šŸ˜‰

The easiest to shift would be Forex Training, I know a lot of people in that industry and many already spend good dough with me. The one that would be most lucrative is CRM, out of these three anyway.

  11. I like:
hologram, mens and freebeer. I see a BIG marketing potential with mens in product/sales. I have an outside of the box idea to use freebeer. I have my popcorn ready and watching too see what happens with Rick and his team in leasing these domains.

Elliot: I’ve been reading your blog for couple of years…first time poster…sorry for the Twitter mix up bro. Peace.

  12. Of the ones not mentioned, I like CheapLand.com, DailyPrayer.com and HomeSafes.com All of them share a market where the “Brand” isn’t the decision driver.
