Investopedia Adds Article About Making Money With Domain Names

Investopedia LogoInvestopedia is a very popular financial website that is described as “a premiere resource for investing education, personal finance, market analysis and free trading simulators.” Based on some analytics I found, it likely gets over a million monthly visits. People visit Investopedia to learn about trading and investing strategies, market news, and for information about various types of investments.

I saw that Investopedia added a new article about domain names last week, and I think it’s pretty neat to see. The article, written by Justin Kuepper, is titled, “How To Make Money With Domain Names,” and it covers a few popular topics such as investing in various types of domain names, buying and selling names, and the risk of domain investments.

The article summary is quite succinct:

Like any investment, domain names come with their own set of risks. However, for diligent investors who consider the risks and returns thoroughly, domain names can become an investment that yields high returns, and a unique way to diversify his/her portfolio of investments.”

If you could add to the Investopedia article, what information do you think is essential that is missing? Personally, I think it’s a pretty solid write-up that covers investments, and I think it would be beneficial to add information about investing in alternative extensions and ccTLDs. Hopefully, they will turn this article into a series of articles on the topic of domain name investments. Perhaps they might benefit readers by adding links to popular resources, like domain forums, news outlets, and blogs.

  1. That’s a good article for people who have never heard about the industry. Also, it’s interesting to notice how the weight of .com vs other TLDs in a domain name is never mentioned.

  2. I didn’t notice this until someone emailed me, but I think there is a bit of very bad advice in the article. According to the author, “Timely names can be great investments when combined with events occurring in that year, such as 2022OlympicPlayers.com.”

I think investing in trademark names, like Olympics, is a very bad idea. I do think timely descriptive domain names like LondonHotels.com to coincide with the Olympics are good investments, but I would never recommend to invest in or purchase names that have trademarks in them.

  3. I agree with you, TM names are to avoid at all cost. That’s why I think the author may have thought the term “olympics” and its adjective “olympic” were generic enough to be used in a domain (I personally wouldn’t reg/buy names with these words though).

  4. That article reads like it was written by a Textbroker level 3 or 4 author that took about 10mins researching the topic, lol.

  5. I agree that it is definitely a great high level view of domains as an investment. It’s great to see the domain industry getting more and more mainstream.

I’m surprised it didn’t mention building out niche sites and domain parking since the title of the article is “How To Make Money With Domain Names”. Though you can’t really make a large amount of revenue (except in rare cases) they can act like dividends in stocks.

  6. Mapeer Investment Co., Ltd is engaged in Investment domain name, cybersquatting valuable domain nam, in January 2012 the transaction volume reached 200,000 $, domain name for Investment or good profession.

They use is open to registered domain names in China, cybersquatting many companies in China, these companies need to earn high profits from the high-priced transfer other people or company, lead to these domain names into the hands of Criminal elements, the use of these domain names to mix the other company’s Web site, there are many counterfeit and fraudulent Web site, seriously damaging the interests of these companies.

So you should register in advance and protect your company important domain. Is a start I did not attach importance,my company domain name in China is cybersquatting by Mapeer Investment Co., Ltd, before I received the e-mail notification of a Chinese company, said Mapeer Investment Co., Ltd. to register some domains and network brand of our company in China.to ask me not to use their own priority the registration of these domain names and network brand before Mapeer Investment Co., Ltd., but at that time I did not attach importance to spam processing.
