GoDaddy Adds Appraisal to Domain Settings Pages

In May of this year, GoDaddy reintroduced its free domain appraisal tool, and the company began showing domain name values on GoDaddy Auctions’ expired auction listings. It looks like GoDaddy is now using its appraisal tool more widely.

I was checking the nameservers on a domain name I have registered at GoDaddy, and I noticed that the registrar is now showing its estimated value on the Domain Settings page within the Domains control panel. You can see an example in this screenshot:

Based on the messaging, it looks like the estimated appraised value is being used as a tool to upsell a product called “Privacy & Business Protection” Package,” which is listed at $14.99/year. I am not really clear about what this package offers or what it has to do with the value of the domain name. It appears to offer Whois privacy but I am not clear on what else is included.

From my perspective, suggesting the domain name owner list the domain name on Afternic or GoDaddy Auctions might be a better upsell opportunity when talking about the value of the domain name. When someone sees that their domain name has value (at least according to GoDaddy), they may be more inclined to sell it for that value rather than try to protect it. I would think “ownership protection” is a given rather than an upsell when using a major registrar like GoDaddy.

I am not sure when GoDaddy began adding the appraised value to the domain management page, but I would imagine they are testing various offers and upsells.

  1. GoDaddy may be in beta mode, but I’ll have to go and take a lot as I tend to use the classic view (table) when managing domains. I like your perspective in regards to promoting auctions versus “ownership protection”.

    • I’m not quite sure what you are referring to. What is the url for the “classic” table view and what is the url for the non-table view?

  2. Who doesn’t love earning 20% commission on someone else’s asset with a few bytes of code data.

They want to monetize the sale of domains people may own in their account maybe.

  3. Great, show me my domain is worth lots of money. You want to help me protect it? Offer an opt-in service where if I forget to renew, auction it off like you always do but give me 80% of the proceeds. That is earning your 20%.
