Geographic .CO Domain Awarded via Founders Program

.CO Registry Founders ProgramI received some good news a couple of days ago.   My Founders Program application for a geographic .CO domain name was approved, and I can take possession of the domain name very soon. I will need to build it out and launch it in the next few weeks, and I will share the development process as I go.

I am very excited about this domain name because it wouldn’t be possible for me to own the .com, and the .CO will be used as part of the branding strategy behind the website. I am still working out the development details, but it’s going to be an exciting project.

Before I announce the domain name I was awarded, I want to see if anyone can guess which name I applied for and was awarded, and the first person to post the correct domain name will win a $50 credit from me at Name.com. I won’t reveal the answer until Monday. One guess per person, and the few people I told aren’t eligible 🙂

You can also have a look to see who is currently using .CO domain names via the same program.

    Easy, it must be

    SanFrancis.co

  2. HongKong.co

The reason is this: the founder’s program application specified your plan. From domains you posted at your in the past, it seems you have been there and have knowledge of it. Further, those Hong Kong names you didn’t sell, you could use to point to the BIG ONE. That’s a big name! Congrats, if you got it.

  3. google.co lol thats one you cundt get in .com lol i dont it would be something like e.co or geo.co

  4. I have to stick by my original submission, since it’s only one entry per person, but I just thought of a great way to tie in the .CO in the branding by using the word “online.” However, I think you would go for the word itself without a suffix. That would be a heck of an acquisition, if it’s what I’m thinking of. Now I’m going to be thinking about this until Monday.

  5. Hi Elliot,
I went for a Google search to know you better, read some articles and I narrowed it down to a few possibilities (NY,danvers,Massachusetts,New England etc) but your statement had me thinking

——I am very excited about this domain name because it wouldn’t be possible for me to own the .com———

so you are excited about this domain which must be pretty valuable for its .com version.
I would take a wild guess and choose

    NewYork.co

  6. I wasn’t going to give an update…. but you’re all wrong so far 🙂

One “clue” I will say is stick to geo locations – cities, states, countries, regions…etc.

  7. @Elliot

Well, actually it can be ‘tranformed into a GEO” …..for example, there is a town in Ontario, Canada named “Elliot Lake” …and a town in the State of Maine named “Eliot” ….furthermore, there was a ghost town in Louisiana names “Elliot City” that was wiped out by floods.

Some towns & cities are renamed (ie: Bombay, India and Primm, Nevada)….you could also consider “Elliotville” – 🙂

    It’s like that !

  8. Elliot,

Well you do like the New England area… did the Boston globe get rights to Boston.co or is that your geo? If Boston is already taken, use my guess as Colorado.CO…

    Thanks

  9. Elliot,
Can you please clarify the process for some of us. Last week I paid Godaddy $300 a pop for a “first shot” at a number of geo.CO’s Now, I see them still available for registry at NetworkSolutions.com, 300.com.co, etc.

Was the $300 worth it or is godaddy just going to take a run at my .CO’s and pocket the spread if I get it, putting me at the top of their request list for the domain? Did it actually increase my chances over a $30 fee?

Thanks for your time and help.

Oh, second guess at your .CO – America.CO

Darn, there goes my chance… Can I change my choice :p

  11. Hrmm… This name better be worth the suspense you’re putting us through. I am about to have an peptic (yeah, I own that dot com) ulcer at age 26…

  12. Given that you said:

“…and the .CO will be used as part of the branding strategy behind the website.”,

    AND,

“… stick to geo locations – cities, states, countries, regions…etc.”

I would guess ColoradoRiver.co as it represents a ‘region’ (the Colorado River region) and the .CO lends itself to branding/conceptual considerations, such as:

    ColoradoRiver.COlorado
    ColoradoRiver.COmpany
    ColoradoRiver.COmpanies
    ColoradoRiver.COmmission
    ColoradoRiver.COnservation
    ColoradoRiver.COmmunity
    ColoradoRiver.COmmunities

  13. Is it me or does anyone else feel this has to be the most widely discussed article on Elliots blog? Besides the one where the goof tricked us about starting to charge for posting comments, lol

Oh the suspense. DoT CO, just transfer the domain over to Elliot so we can know what we’ve been BS’ing about in the comments area for the past 3-4 days!!

I know that is throwing a wide net, but hope I got one right! I don’t care if I don’t get the credit, but I would like to thank 50states .com for the list of geographic names in America.

  15. guessing your plan only makes sense for a smaller niche market in order to have gained approval…my initial guess would be someplace animal friendly to cross promote your dog, cat and bird sites….but more locally to you would probably be

    cambridge.co

  16. OMG i hadnt read u had announced it well it will be in other opportunity, lol it was just a post before mine, well at least i know i said the proper one although u had already revealed it,
