Do You Own Category Defining .com Domain Names?

Rick Schwartz has been discussing the requirements to be eligible to participate in his new JointVentures.com venture. When you look at them as a unit, it’s essentially category defining .com domain names that are eligible.

Here are the requirements that Rick listed:

  • Must be a dot com.
  • Must clearly state & define the product or service being sold.
  • Must be easy to pronounce & therefore pass the radio test.
  • Must not be longer than necessary, the shorter the better.
  • Must be about a product or service that is in demand & being searched for.
  • Must be easy to remember, in fact it must be a no brainer to remember.
  • Must be a domain a business could be built on.

I don’t know whether some people don’t understand what a “category defining” domain name is, or if they are hoping for the best when they submit them, but I am wondering what category defining .com domain names you own. If you own any and they are for sale, I welcome you to mention that, too.

In case you’re wondering, here are a few of the category defining domain names my company owns right now: ContactManagement.com, BrandManagement.com, EventPlanner.com, HomeStorage.com, and DogWalker.com.

  1. We own SocialCasino.com

It is a next big thing in gambling.

Social-Casino is a new emerging category and many casino with social in their name are coming online these days. We have been contacted so many times for selling the domain but we want a lease and/or joint venture. If we have to sell, it will be multi-million sale in the mid to high double digit millions.

But as per Rick S, it is not a category in the phone book 🙂

    • Appreciate your feedback. It seems I have a lot to learn. Still, not sure why marketenabler.com wouldn’t count. In terms of exact search volume it comes pretty close to ‘brand management’ and is over three times as much as ‘contact management’.

And no, definitely not saying it’s better than those in anyway, just comparing.(And wondering.)

  2. motorscooters.com
    MetalFabrication.com
    TropicalIslands.com
    CaliforniaRestaurants.com

    Maybe I will contact Rick
All are for sale at all times for the right price

    Happy Thanksgiving Elliot

  3. Domain Name: PizzaStickers.com

Pizza delivery boxes can be used as a medium of advertisement to promote businesses. The respective ad sticker(s) can be put on the boxes and delivered to the customers. For instance, if you had a flower store, your ad could be placed on the pizza delivery boxes. The pizza delivery boxes go directly into homes, workplaces or a parties of a large number of people. Hence they form a very good medium to reach out to a large number of potential customers. As many stickers can be sold as the number of pizzas.

  5. Would you consider ParkingGames.com to be a category defining domain? That’s my pride and joy that I have finally purchased after working up to it for years now.

  6. I don’t know if it’s a category killer but it’s the fastest growing food producing sector in the world. Producing about half of the seafood eaten worldwide and growing about 9 percent per year.

Plus governments and business around the world are investing millions of dollars yearly to advance it.

In addition to the food side of this niche name it also includes ornamental fish, aquariums and anything grown in water.

    Aquaculture.com

    Any thoughts?

  7. Wow. you are spoon fed the answers and still you don’t get it.

There are so many bad examples above to choose from. Is “Parking Games” or “Pizza Stickers” in the Yellow pages as a category?

    Pizza Stickers. omg.

@Elliot, how do you restrain yourself from ridiculing these morons.

    • Obviously parking games isn’t a big as something like OnlineGames.com or something, but to say I don’t get it? No category defining online gaming domains would be found in the yellow pages.

Parking games is a category of online games that ~450,000 people a month are searching for. I feel the $55k price tag was well worth it…

    • ParkingGames.com went way over my head until I did the research. There are many such games such as Park My Car, Car Park Challenge and Turbo Parking. Seems to fit the “category defining” criteria with room to spare.

  8. I have some .com’s I really like. They probably do not fit Rick’s criteria but I still like them. I mean almost everybody has a plunger now right – I couldn’t find it in the dictionary but I found one in my bathroom:

    AlternateEnergy.com
    AthleticMedicine.com
    AutomotiveWarranty.com
    AutomotiveWarranties.com
    BodyMakeup.com
    CamperShell.com
    CarRenting.com
    ClothesRack.com
    EngagementJewelry.com
    FashionForMen.com
    FashionRunway.com
    FreezeDryers.com
    LandListings.com
    MensEarrings.com
    Plungers.com
    Softgels.com
    StereoCabinets.com
    StereoReceiver.com
    StereoReceivers.com
    StraightJacket.com
    StringBikinis.com
    SubwooferBoxes.com
    SubwooferEnclosures.com
    SwampCoolers.com
    TeenJeans.com
    VitaminSupplement.com
    WildYam.com

  9. I own Cycleclassifieds.com. It is for sale or for rent.
I also own OnBroadway.com which I think gets right to the heart of the matter. Same deal as above. Will consider a development deal also.

    • I don’t agree… you can certainly find an event planner and a dog walker in the phone book.

Which of these bullets below do EventPlanner.com and DogWalker.com not meet?

      Must be a dot com.
Must clearly state & define the product or service being sold.
Must be easy to pronounce & therefore pass the radio test.
Must not be longer than necessary, the shorter the better.
Must be about a product or service that is in demand & being searched for.
Must be easy to remember, in fact it must be a no brainer to remember.
Must be a domain a business could be built on.

    • Hi Elliot, they’re very good names, but I wouldn’t think that they receive all that much type-in traffic on their own. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

The basic generic term is “EventPlanning.”

    • “Home Storage” produces 1,000 exact match searches per month.

I’m sure Elliot owns many domains that produce much higher searches than 1,000. i.e. Burbank.com, Lowell.com,

    • Do any of these names that Rick has sold pass the test? Probably not. I guess that is why he sold them so cheap…

      Meet.me – $450k
      eCruise.com and iCruise.com – Cash and Stock
      235.com – $100k
      iReport.com – $750k
      ChinaTours.com – $200k
      TokyoHotels.com – $200k plus
      PartnerCash.com – $110k
      SydneyHotels.com – $100k
      eScore.com – $100k
      273.com – $50k
      PunchBowl.com and MyPunchBowl.com – Cash and Stock
      236.com – Undisclosed
      RoomDividers.com – $75k

    • Like I said before, just because a name isn’t category defining or doesn’t meet certain criteria, doesn’t mean it’s bad. It simply means it doesn’t match a certain set of criteria.

    • Well, if that’s what’s being asked then everyone would own a “category-defining” name then, wouldn’t they? It just depends on how big the category is. As we can see in the comments, most of the “categories” that are being represented are too small.

  10. I have tried to follow the advice of Frank Schilling regarding the value of category defining domain names and their defining properties. Below are some examples of domain names purchased at registration cost:

    BrandCameras.com
    CycloComputers.com
    HomeDesktops.com
    RomanticBistro.com
    DentalOfficeSearch.com
    FrameBuildings.com
    GumStimulators.com
    WaffleMixes.com
    WideDisplay.com

I liked the names posted by Doc and MarkH. Dennis, I hope your AnxietyCounseling.com is considered a valid category domain as I have TreatingPhobias.com.

    • Thanks much. I am thinking that your names do better in term of ease-of-spelling. However, my logic is that people who are dealing with the problem and are seeking help probably know how to spell the condition by now.

    • I developed and sold phobias.net a few months ago (But according to Rick it is not a category defining domain because it is a .net).
People that suffer from it, know it. I own a whole buch of psych domains. If you need some advice contact me.

  11. If your bowl invite committee insists on an undefeated SEC or Pac12 team, you are left with noone to invite – no bowl game because noone meets your standard. Yet the SEC and Pac12 hold most of the top ten BCS rankings. Well, I guess Rick might consider Notre Dame 🙂

  12. I am not sure but putting this here

    TouristPlanner.com
    EventNear.com
    BusinessNear.com
    MallNear.com
    LondonC.com
    DealByCity.com
    GreenNSolar.com
    VillaRooms.com

  13. The examples of domains you listed from your portfolio hold good search value.

Every domain you listed has at least 1,000+ exact match searches. They are all dot com. I’m sure they’re aged domains.

  14. First- I am a collector of domains. More specifically the type someone might read about in the tech blogs as web 2.0 Ycombinator type companies. So far, my collection is about 300… but during this collecting I did pick up a few generics (doubtful they meet the requirements but what the hey).

    InvitoDoctor.com
    InvitoDoctors.com
    iWestVirginia.com
247Bonds.com (24/7 on every bail bond sign in America)
    BathandKitchens.com
    CigarsandAccessories.com
eCarStation.com (Instead of a gas station an electric car station- stretch?)
    OnlineSR22.com
    PaperAutomation.com
ParentPlans.com (every divorce with kids in America)
    SkiCottages.com
    ToyotaCamryleasing.com
    VillaLeasing.com
    VendingCapital.com
    VacantStorage.com
    Reagan.org

The rest are just 5-6 letter “cool” sounding names. Please don’t be brutal 🙂 I am not in this for profit just collecting. In fact they are all parked and I will make less than $100 a year from Godaddy. Just wanted to add to Elliots great blog, read the comments in case a domain might be for sale that I like.

    Best,

  15. We just put these up recently. Are they category defining?

    ENTIREBOOKS.COM
    ENTIREJEWELRY.COM
    ENTIREFURNITURE.COM
    ENTIRELUGGAGE.COM
    ENTIRESHOES.COM
    ENTIRECOUPONS.COM
    ENTIRESTORE.COM
    NONSTOPBACKUP.COM

  16. @ Elliot,

In addition, on Nov. 7th Rick also spoke of stuff you’d find in a dept store.

“An exact match for the yellow pages. OR A DEPARTMENT IN WALMART. It must be category defining.”

    http://www.ricksblog.com/my_weblog/2012/11/category-killer-domain-namesdefined-premium-domainsremain-undefined-and-less-than-premium.html

Would something like this fit? BoysDepartment[dot]com
    (Also have BoysDept[dot]com)

From Frager, “If you were shopping for boys clothes at Bloomingdales…”
    http://fragerfactor.blogspot.com/2010/12/why-brands-need-generic-domain-domain.html

BTW, have some similar to your
    ContactManagement.com & DogWalker.com
    Mine –
    ContactOwner[dot]com & DogWalkingService[dot]com

  17. Just bought BlackFridayTvDeals.net for $6.99

Not a category defining domain because it is a .net and long tail name…

But has exact match keyword global search 6500 and exact local search of 6500, CPC $0.89

    Probably worth nothing…….

    • @ramond
That’s a great name 😉 sad part is BF is once a year and .net is a turnoff 😉
But I do have to say you are Right with your last statement ” it’s worth nothing ” Don’t give up 🙂

  19. Would D8R.Org (Bulldozers) and D8Rs.Org (Video recording devices) be specific enough?

These are both clearly defining categories (but super specific), but sadly have the .Org domain.

  23. Picking your partners in life is one of the biggest decisions you can make. A lot of people just don’t want to JV with Rick Schwartz.

As far as the names posted here, it does offer some harsh perspective on just how few people really do own the most desirable domain names and how the rest of everyone else is so terribly clueless of where they really stand in the domain ecosystem.

    • regarding FutureDarshan.com, you obviously don’t know the connotations of darshan. In contrast to your claim, your domain name is terrible for astrology or future prediction. I don’t think this domain name is good for anything. The name is incoherent and inconsistent in so many ways I could almost call it an oxymoron.

  27. Any Suggestions on these domains?

    DomesticBooking.com
    TimberCeiling.com
    7SeaterMPV.com
    AdventureHotSpots.com
    Holidayable.com
    MobileBookers.com

  28. Elliot,

Thank you. I just started my monday morning off with a good laugh as I sifted through all the rubbish people have posted. 95% of “domainers” have blinders on and are completely oblivious to the crap they own.

These types of posts are my favorite because 1. I get to see the crap come out of the woodwork and 2. get to see how PROUD people are of the crap (the finniest part to me)

    Anyways, thanks for the laugh.

  29. Uhg I couldnt read anymore past the halfway mark of comments. In what way do “domainers” listing names that are not relevant in any copacity to what the subject is?

Category Defining. Is it that hard to know what you might find in the Yellow pages as a bold category vs. a sub sub sub sub…par?

    thegaypornshop.com
    Pornting.com
    Sexnergy.com
    mallnear.com

oh yeah there it is in my phone book

Id do more but the entertainment of it went away. Thanks guys!

  30. Re:Do You Own Category Defining .com Domain Names?

    Criteria::
    —————————
    Must be a dot com.
Must clearly state & define the product or service being sold.
Must be easy to pronounce & therefore pass the radio test.
Must not be longer than necessary, the shorter the better.
Must be about a product or service that is in demand & being searched for.
Must be easy to remember, in fact it must be a no brainer to remember.
Must be a domain a business could be built on.
    —————————

    phpcoders.com
    javacoders.com

    🙂

  31. We own the following category defining DNs:
Automaticsearching.com (new feature just adopted by Google)

    Childrenrestaurant.com (over 33,000 exact searches/month)
Iridescentdisplay.com (just launched by Samsung for cell phones)
    All for sale.
    Comments welcome.

  32. First time that i comment on this blog. Congrats for the hard work Elliot!

I have one yellow page domain. In fact i have more, but i’ll just put this .com, ginasios.com

    • I think it’s pretty clear at this point that you aren’t sharing category defining domain names but are looking for an outlet to post other names. I recommend posting them elsewhere since there are many people subscribing to this thread every time someone posts, and it’s probably annoying them by now.

  35. Just a few of mine may be ok.

  36. I’m a little late to the party, but here are a few of my domain names:

    ApprovedWeb.com

I plan to sell these (although they are not for sale at this moment). Are they as good as I think they are?
