Daniel Negari Talks .XYZ on Bloomberg

The good press for Daniel Negari and his .XYZ registry keeps coming. This afternoon, Daniel was interviewed on Bloomberg, and I have embedded the video interview below.

Regardless of what you think of Google’s decision to create Alphabet and use ABC.xyz for its domain name, I think we can all agree that this has been fantastic news for the .XYZ registry. I also think this news is good for the new gTLD program.

  1. ” I also think this news is good for the new gTLD program. ”

From my understanding, you don’t invest in gTLDs, Elliot. So please expand on this statement.

Not all gTLDs are created equal, and if that’s a representation of gTLDs to the public, many will be disappointed by alternatives to .com.

    • Correct. The only new gTLD domain names I own that I consider investments are n.Holdings and n.Ventures. I own several others such as Silver.Ventures, Elliot.Link (and other similar names), and TeamSilver.Rocks, but I would not classify them as investments.

I think it is good news for the new gTLD program for two big reasons:

      1) Awareness – <any more people know about the new extensions because of the Alphabet news than prior to the news.

      2) Acceptance – People can say "If Google can build a website / brand on a new gTLD domain name, I can build one, too."

    • 1)I agree.
2)Do not agree and even if they did they would quickly discover they need the extension the world types in and expects to see.

Google naming a parent company that itself offers no service and will not be the focus of the plan does not equal the end or even competition to the dot com. What it has done is act like a magnet for thousands of more suckers who register that crap not taking into consideration common sense.

No new business uses .xyz because google did and tells a story of success later on. In fact register the dot com and you’ll hear them calling soon enough.

    • In my opinion, XYZ cannot possibly be considered an ambassador of the gTLD program, more than any other gTLD that actually makes sense: .Photo, .Ventures, .Media – pick any one. Even .Blue and .Pink make sense in certain pair combinations.

This type of coverage, in my personal opinion, has the potential to actually create a negative exposure of the “dot com alternatives”, when the “representative” is a gTLD that is as esoteric as any three letter sequence.

It’s great exposure for the XYZ Registry, however, and that’s the news here. Google could build anything on any TLD and call it revolutionary. They hold both the pie and the knife as far as search engine visibility goes.

Incidentally, the site is now blocked in China.

  2. Is there a link to the whole interview anywhere, because if you noticed she raises a question that must be near and dear to every domain investor’s heart and then the video abruptly ends. The questions she raises there is very important to the big picture indeed. So far I have not found a longer version of the video.

  3. Okay, so check out this partial quote from Ron Jackson’s excellent article on this…AND THEN ASK YOURSELF what things might have been like by now IF ANY OF THIS HAD EVER BEEN DONE FOR .US:

“I think the fact […] has overshadowed the non-stop marketing spadework Negari and his team has done with registries, purple man mascots, bobsled teams – you name it. He has managed to keep his extension and himself in the spotlight ever since .xyz went live.”

Has .US ever even once been promoted “in the spotlight” that you’ve ever witnessed all these years since 2002? No of course…certainly not the “spotlight,” and at most a few tiny pin pricks here and there, even when a site like Del.icio.us was popular and known no less…

  4. The .xyz registry does a very good job of targeting generations x,y and z with its marketing. This population likes things hip and trendy. They have a tremendous amount of purchasing power. .xyz is going to become very popular with this segment. I think this is huge for .xyz but not necessarily for the other gTLDs. They each have to create their own .Buzz

    • Last time I checked, nobody refers to themselves as “generation” with a letter attached.

Some media might, reporting on cumulative data, refer to “baby boomers” and the like.

The “generation xyz” reference is an invention to justify the existence of the acronym. XYZ also stands for examine your zipper.

Negari first bought XYZ.com in 2010 and the gTLD was an afterthought.

  5. Elliot is the only one who managed to embed the vid. LOL. Why don’t they make it easy for people and provide a url for that like youtube?
