Daily Poll: How Much is Your Most Valuable Domain Name Worth?

Everyone loves their domain names. Some were won in difficult bidding wars and others were bought after long and sometimes challenging negotiations. Most of us buy domain names because we think they have more upside than the purchase price.

I am curious to know what you think your most valuable domain name is worth. You are invited to share what you think your most valuable domain name is and are also welcome to share what you think the name is worth in the comment section and within the poll.

  1. I’d love to see those million dollar names people who voted own. Reminds me of some of those infamous eBay listings and how optimistic some domain owner are 😛

  2. @Martin
Here my multi million $$$$ domain name which I turned down numerous low 6 figures

    gxnx.com

Excellent for bitcoin/crypto/block chain or high tech name…

      • Ha, you know at the very least 5 and 10 would make it more interesting, but you’re just showing me who’s the boss here. I wonder if I’d have the one entry for 50 if you included 50 though. Very well, your blog and still a nice little thread…

      • I for sure do not have any domain names worth $50 million + and I am very sure that nobody reading this has any either. There may be a couple readers with legit $10m+ domain names but I wouldn’t bet on it.

      • “and I am very sure that nobody reading this has any either”

Okay now you’re just being grumpy, Mr. Grumpy Grumps. You know you can’t be quite so sure, but I understand. I really do.

Some day perhaps you may come to realize consciously just how good my tireless advocacy has been for the industry despite your own tendencies to play it safe and be a good “company man” who goes with the flow and doesn’t rock the boat.

But still one of my favorite industry blog sites and was my first favorite originally. 😉

  3. I consider our best domain to be Cotai.com. Cotai is the area of Macau where somewhere approaching USD $50 billion has been invested to create “the Las Vegas Strip of Asia” which is currently visited by about two-thirds the number of people who visit Las Vegas each year, and which generates about twice the gambling revenue of Las Vegas (and two-thirds of all the gambling revenue in Macau). The $3.4 billion MGM Cotai is opening next week, another multi-billion dollar resort around the end of the year, there is still undeveloped land for additional projects, and major transportation and infrastructure improvements are in the works.

In 2008, when I believe there were only two casino-hotels built in Cotai, a company paid us a nonrefundable $20,000 to have 90 days to come up with an additional $830,000 to purchase Cotai.com for $850,000 (they were originally going to pay $1.4 million for both Cotai.com and CotaiStrip.com but Las Vegas Sands Corp. was in the process of obtaining a trademark on “Cotai Strip” so that domain was taken out of the deal). During those 90 days the 2008 economic downturn hit and Las Vegas Sands announced they were suspending work on some of their Cotai projects indefinitely. The company subsequently didn’t purchase (and after some difference of opinion we entered into an amicable settlement with Las Vegas Sands by which they became the owners of CotaiStrip.com and disclaimed any right to domains containing “Cotai” apart from those containing “Cotai Strip” and a few other expressions they were trademarking).

Another factor to consider in the valuation of the domain is that the Cotai area of Macau, which is a few miles south of the Macau Peninsula (the difference between the two often being compared to the difference between the Las Vegas Strip and Downtown Las Vegas), is connected via the Lotus Bridge to Hengqin Island, which is part of the city of Zhuhai in Guangdong province, China. Billions are being invested in Hengqin to turn the island into an Orlando-style theme park tourist destination (without gambling, which is illegal in mainland China). So Cotai, which offers not only gambling but some of the most luxurious hotels in the world and many entertainment options, will be the geographical center of what may become the most popular luxury and entertainment tourist destination in the world.

Then – and I hope this isn’t too long, Elliot, but you did extend the invitation – you have to consider that hypersonic flight, which Elon Musk is working on, will sooner or later enable visitors from the west to arrive in a fraction of the time it takes now.

I’m not going to put a number valuation on the domain except to say I chose the “more than $1 million” poll option. I think the value will obviously continue to increase as the area continues its rapid development, becomes internationally well-known, and tourist numbers continue to rise (barring short-term fluctuations and a number of possible tragedies which could affect any geo domain). I’ll just end with the following link about the LasVegas.com sale, in case anyone here hasn’t seen it, without meaning to suggest I think Cotai.com will ever be as valuable as LasVegas.com (although I wouldn’t rule it out as a possibility a decade or two down the road):
