On January 10, Verisign filed an 8k with the SEC with an update on the .Web gTLD domain name extension. From the filing:
“As the Company previously disclosed, on January 18, 2017, the Company received a Civil Investigative Demand from the Antitrust Division of the United States Department of Justice (“DOJ”) requesting certain material related to the Company becoming the registry operator for the .web gTLD. On January 9, 2018, the DOJ notified the Company that this investigation was closed.”
From my vantage point, this seems to indicate that Verisign will be able to move forward and operate the .Web registry, selling .Web domain names to the general public. Many people seem to believe .Web will be one of the top performing new gTLD extensions. For today’s daily poll, I ask readers to guess how many .Web domain names will be sold in the first year they are available to buy. People may not be able to buy a .Web domain name for quite some time still but I am interested in knowing how many you think will be sold the first year.
Depends on price, but gtlds are a failure, even Frank doesnt bother jumping up and down like a crazy Tim Cruise on Oprahs couch anymore.
The registries do not waste money marketing any longer, good for hobbyists, but failure if you really want a domain, and dont know what your doing, because your going to end up with all your traffic going to the .com
These are just sideshows, same argument was made in 2013, still valid, web is an aged term, like antique.
Also I will save all you fools money right now if nobody wants .net, what void will .web really fill, mean same thing, you can buy a really .net for under $999 everyday of the week
Net word is more used than web.
I have no idea why web could be better than .net.
Net has anout 15MM registrations and it has been for a long time.
NewTLDs do not create any more so much enthusiasm a as at the beginning.

.Web is merely “good,” or “okay,” not a new beginning. Nothing to sing and dance about.
And as has well been pointed out, price and terms factor heavily. If another “money grab” model, then “fuhgettaboutit.”
If the same price, terms and protections as .com, then maybe it will be a bit popular.
P.S. Ergo, I think we can expect most registrations to probably be by “domainers.”
More than 1 million if priced under $10. Probably more like 3-5 million. It is still dog turd though!
