Daily Poll: Have You Sold a Non .com Domain Name?

It is no secret that the vast majority of my domain names are .com domain names. I own and have owned some non .com domain names, but my focus is .com. That said, I have sold a handful of non .com domain names. I would estimate that the figure is probably about 3 but it could be a few more from a long time ago. One off the top of my head is a .net that matched a .com I sold and I also sold a package of 5 names in the same extension.

Have you sold a non .com domain name before? My guess is that somewhere north of 75% will say yes given the number of people who I know buy ccTLD domain names and there are also quite a few people who have had varying levels of success with the new extensions.

  1. Sold more than 50 non-com domain names in past 10 years.
The highest price I have done was CreditCard.net, sold for $138,000 USD in 2011.

  2. Sold Diapers.co.in to Amazon for $20k and Tyre.co.in and Tire.co.in , last year for $20k each

  3. I sold thousands of .cc and .la domains. I was a sales and marketing partner/re-seller in the early 2000s for both registries and handled their premium inventory.

  4. In terms of endusers 1 .net and some cctlds but that was a long time ago. (a lot more variety of extension if you include sales to other domainers)

  5. Allow me to share some worldy experience.

A few years ago, I jumped in early on the .CC cctld. Total disaster. Happened again with .Co and .Tv too. Again, I jumped into .Info and .Net. Complete waste. I bought some of the new gtlds and you know how that pathetic story ended, all a complete waste.

My advice is to stick with .Com, the undisputed industry leader. The others are for fools who have not learned from the mistakes of others such as myself.

    • You’ve hit it right on the head! Ferrenzy,

Anyone who has owned these alt tlds for a while knows they don’t sell easily, the sell through rates to endusers are a small fraction of .com and the reg fees soon pile up.

I know people who were big on .info and .biz back in the day, they are no longer to be seen in the domain industry, ditto for .tv, .us and all the others. Either they are off doing something else or have remained hobbyists.

  6. had a lowball $xxx offer on a .xxx that i paid reg fee for and turned it down and let the name expire ’cause WTF. maybe i’m not too bright but i have principles.

  7. In the early ‘00s, the first two domains that I ever sold were both .NETs, to a buyer in Hyderabad Pakistan. The twelve hundred dollars that I earned served as a BAD INFLUENCE on my investing strategy because it encouraged me to register and hold onto too many .NET and crappy .COM domains.

  8. I no longer own non .com names, but I have sold a few other extensions over the last decade.
Anyone else ever sold a .TEL? I might be one of the few that have….
Here are some sales that I can remember:

Flint.tel sold to Flint Telecom Florida
Blenders.me sold directly to CEO of Vitamix USA
Pomegranates.me sold to POM juice company? aka Wonderfull company USA
    HotelReservations.me
    YNOT.me
    PLUSONE.US sold to GOOGLE when they launched the “+1” in response to Facebook “like” button;
sold a bunch of LLL.CO, and NNN.ME and NNN.CO in 2016 etc etc

I sold many more but these are the ones I can recall.

Please note that I do NOT invest in such names or gTLDS.
