Daily Poll: Geographic.com Auction Result?

I was the winning bidder on the Geographic.com expiry auction on NameJet yesterday afternoon. There were 122 bids from 84 bidders, and the purchase price was $17,710.  Ordinarily, I do not share the price I paid for a domain name, but since this one was a public auction, the price will be publicly reported anyway.

I like Geographic.com because there are many uses for the domain name. There are likely hundreds of companies and websites (or more) around the world that use the descriptive “Geographic” term in their name. I can also see that there are thousands of registered domain names with “Geographic” in them, and it looks like nearly 100 “Geographic” domain names with different extensions are registered (like Geographic.Farm and Geographic.Media).

Do you think I got a good deal, paid market value, or overpaid to buy the domain name?

  1. Surprised TomTom let it expire. I’d say its a decent deal to hold for an end user. A pretty pricey purchase but if you can afford it, its worth it.

  2. well… according to my pricing model algorithm the correct price is $16,940.
so you overpaid… but not by much. if you are willing to wait for 19 days you should be able to sell it for more.

  4. While GIS Companies seem ideal for this name, I would also be on the look out for potential interest from Augmented Reality/VR/Mixed Reality Companies, especially game/themes with location based realities like Pokeman Go etc

  5. Good domain to throw into your vault.

I voted that you over paid. The market right now is soft and deals are out there. I looked at dictionary word .com domain sales from this year on Namebio and found prices on pretty good domains to be mostly below 10k. Here’s what I mean..

    intake.com 12,230 USD 2018-04-26 Sedo
    genomes.com 4,300 USD 2018-04-24 NameJet
    eagerly.com 9,400 USD 2018-04-20 NameJet
    striving.com 8,100 USD 2018-04-17 NameJet
    leakage.com 4,150 USD 2018-04-17 DropCatch
    medicates.com 2,050 USD 2018-04-16 Flippa
    shuts.com 870 USD 2018-04-16 DropCatch
    exporting.com 8,000 USD 2018-04-11 GoDaddy
    uniformity.com 9,495 USD 2018-04-10 Sedo
    togetherness.com 7,392 USD 2018-04-09 Sedo
    bunions.com 14,351 USD 2018-04-06 GoDaddy
    bicycled.com 749 USD 2018-04-06 Flippa
    devote.com 9,000 USD 2018-04-04 Sedo
    surrounds.com 500 USD 2018-04-04 NameJet
    experiencing.com 2,200 USD 2018-04-03 Sedo
    communism.com 10,099 USD 2018-03-31 Sedo
    physicists.com 3,200 USD 2018-03-29 NameJet

Still, it is a solid domain. Congrats on the acquisition and best of luck with it! I hope it sells for much more than you paid for it.

    • I appreciate the thorough comment. I don’t agree about the soft market assessment though. Most of the names on that list are tough to use commercially (IMO). Only two or maybe three of those names really jump out at me as good buys:

Intake.com and Devote.com are two names I totally missed and likely would have been willing to pay more than the sale price (although the buyers may have been willing to pay more, too). Genomes.com was a solid deal, but the plural (Genomes.com instead of Genome.com) threw me off a bit.

I am seeing a much more competitive market right now, especially when other domain investors are involved. It is harder to get good quality inventory these days. That said, I don’t know if the end user market is growing as rapidly.

  6. perfect name for many applications

    ditto AR/VR suggestion

reminds me of episodic.com, acquired by google

learn to code by developing it

  7. Solid acquisition.

Not to be contrarian but I could see NGeo taking an interest, especially in their adventure travel division. Maybe you can hit them with a 1-2 punch given your other nice name in the space. 😉

    It will find a home.

    Happy adventuring!

  8. I voted that you underpaid. The market for domains has been down but it always comes back. NatG would be the obvious first buyer and from there you could hit travel companies or any company with that word in their domain or arena of business. What’s your take on 2-3 word domains? for example, I own:

    LifeInsuranceDetective.com
    ReverseMortgageDetective.com
    LiquidVitaminGuide.com
    LifeInsuranceDictionary.com

these are considered long tail domains, Im not selling them but if offered the right price I may. I stumbled across your site when trying to email the founder of Hostgator, awesome story of him buying the ranch.
