Daily Poll: Does a Cryptocurrency Company Need a .Com Domain Name?

Yesterday, it was reported on NamePros that a blockchain company called Swarm acquired the Swarm.com domain name for an undisclosed sum. I have noticed quite a few cryptocurrency related businesses (platforms, exchanges, wallet, and other blockchain related entities) acquire high value brand matching .com domain names in the aftermarket. Some sales have been public (Token.com and Tokens.com) and others have been private. Most seem to come after raising capital.

From my perspective, many companies start out on inferior .com domain names or alternative extensions. Owning the exact match domain name is good for branding and can help convey trust. That is just my perspective, so take it for what it’s worth.

Today’s poll question is do you think a cryptocurrency / blockchain entity needs its exact match brand .com domain name, or do you think they would be fine without it?

  1. I’ve sold several single word .org and .net domains to emerging cryptocurrency companies. In one case, they forwarded the composite, two word .com to the single word .org.

One of the obvious reasons is price. While the .com can cost six to seven figures, a quality .org or .net can be had for four to five figures.

Another reason, is that the .org TLD can provide a status upgrade to lesser ccTLDs, e.g. .io, .ai and such. Dot .net domains work equally well. My .org to .net ration is 2/1 however.

If the company has lots of money, they might go for the .com. Then again, I’ve had inquiries for cryptocurrency related .com domains, that despite being able to afford them, did not want to pay my asking price.

  2. Great question, I hear alot. Really depends on goals for marketing. But today, many execs are under more pressure to look “right” for investors and board members than to perform via marketing. So the best choice for them is spend the $ on the obvious domain.

Truth is many could achieve more success using a non premium domain for brand utility, and carefully crafted marketing campaigns for marketing performance.

  3. Yes they should, if they want to be taken seriously and not lose web traffic and Important emails.

But some crypto businesses use .org because Bitcoin, Litecoin and Ethereum organizations use .org.
They should upgrade to .Com eventually though.

Prime example is Bitcoin.com which is owned by a Bitcoin Cash advocate.
People go to Bitcoin.com thinking it’s Bitcoin, but it’s not.

  4. If they ever want to be mainstream then they’ll need the .com. The general public is not going to use a .io, .ws or new tld.

A lot will stay “niche” or will go out of business so it won’t matter for them.
