Contest Results

Whether you submitted a name, made a comment, or logged a vote, thank you again for participating in the contest. I was surprised at the number of submissions, happy that three sales have been reported so far, and hopeful that the additional exposure from a Domaining.com sponsored headline will help the winning name sell.

There were nearly 300 votes cast for the top ten domain names, and one name was the winner by a pretty solid margin. The winning domain name received about 24% of the total votes cast.

I thought it was pretty cool that the votes were pretty evenly spread out for the remaining names, which indicates that none of the names selected were “bad.” I posted a screenshot of the vote distribution so you can see how evenly spread the voting was. I could come up with a reason why each domain name has value, but I think the winning name is pretty solid and will likely sell.

Anyway, without further adieu, the winning name was BabyPhotographer.com, with a price of $5,900. I think there were likely a few reasons contributing to its win.

There are thousands of baby photographers across the United States, and it’s a profession with many independent contractors. There can only be one company that uses the exact match “BabyPhotographer.com” domain name, and it’s a status symbol, good for SEO, and a level of authority with a name like that. A baby photographer can make several hundreds of dollars for each photo shoot, so these professionals wouldn’t have an issue paying the asking price.

Incidentally, I sold BirthPhotography.com to a photographer a couple years ago, although the price is confidential.

In addition to these intrinsic factors, I also thing the fact that HyperbaricChambers.com and WritingBlog.com were sold during the course of the voting caused those two names to receive fewer votes than they may have had they not sold.

Thank you all for participating. I will be in touch with the winner to determine a listing date. If you are interested in buying it, of course you can get in touch with him prior to the sale listing.

  1. SkinClinics.com also sold for $1000 as a result of your contest Elliot.

I still happen to be waiting on the purchaser to provide some details for the transfer, but I am sure he is a man of his word and will follow through.

    Thanks!

  2. Just a note: WritingBlog.com owner has not responded to my offer to purchase at BIN price.. Looks like the deal is off. I will keep my offer open for another 24 hrs.

  3. Just because he offered it at $750 on the contest page, doesn’t mean he has to stick to that price, he probably sees a lot more value than $750 in the domain now.

  4. @ Ron

Owner emailed me today asking if I minded if he sold it before the contest was over and I told him I didn’t mind since selling was the point of holding the contest. I would think the owner will go through with the deal.

  5. @ Sai, thanks for the fast deal.

It’s correct that I awaited Elliot’s confirmation before selling the domain (i wouldn’t have sold it for higher either).

Also the votes were much appreciated.

Elliot, thanks again for the publicity of the domain! Donation sent.

    Best Regards,

    Jeroen

  6. Voted for BabyPhotographer.com as it was my favorite from the start. Congrats to everyone on the sales and best of luck with the sponsored listing.

  7. There might be a pretty strong first mover opportunity out there with CashMob.com, that’s currently sitting there for a few grand BIN.

See G Trends for that term. The news here in Chicago has been blabbering about them all morning.

Seems to have a viral’y/social networking basis, might be a microburst, might be a more durable trend but it doesn’t take a genius to see how a standalone site could be very profitable if it keeps up.

My dance card is so full, I can’t even think of another project but this one might be worth it. If someone earns a ton, I can be thanked with anything priced “POR” at Guitar Salon.

  8. If Elliot decides to run other contests, the following are my suggestions:

1- There should be no short list and the votings on all enteries should be done by ALL those taking parts.

2- “NO ONE” should be allowed to express their personal opinions on any of the enteries, as this would definitely affect the results. This would specifically have an effect on the final decisions made by the less experienced domainers.

  9. Hi Elliot,

Once you won an auction & the domain name has been transfer to your account, how long does it take before the previous owner’s sale listing of said name disappear from sedo, godaddy, etc?

  10. “@Troy Hallewell: Did the sale of SkinClinics.com go through?”

Looks like it will not. The person that offered has not been returning my emails.

Site is ranked on the front page of Google too…
