Here’s How President Obama Acquired Obama.org via NameJet

Obama Foundation - Obama.orgFormer US President Barack Obama acquired the Obama.org domain name, and it is now being used for the Obama Foundation website. President Obama announced the news on his Twitter handle yesterday:

When researching  the Whois records for this domain name,  I noticed a domain name industry connection. Prior to the recent privatization of the Whois information for Obama.org, the owner of the domain name was  listed as industry veteran Kellie Peterson. Kellie now works on the domain registrar side of Automattic, the parent company of WordPress.com.

According to  NameBio,  Obama.org was  acquired via NameJet in 2011 for $2,800. Based on Historical Whois records from DomainTools, it looks to me like this was a privately held domain name that was auctioned  instead of an expired domain auction. Kellie was the winning bidder in the auction, and she told me that she acquired the domain name on behalf of the President and his campaign.

Interestingly, as Kellie recalls, it was someone who was “frontrunning” the NameJet auction who alerted

Kevin Fink Interviews Colin Campbell of .Club

I think the .Club registry is one of the most successful new gTLD registries. I want to share an interview NamePros conducted with Colin Campbell, CEO of the .Club registry. The interview took place at NamesCon last year, so it is interesting to watch it one year later. Kevin Fink conducted the interview.

The NamePros team conducted quite a few interviews with other industry executives, and you can catch them on its  YouTube channel. It’s neat to witness the growth of NamePros over the last couple of years as it expands beyond a standard forum format and adds videos, interviews, auctions, and other features. I am not an active participant, but I enjoy visiting regularly.

John Berryhill Shares Picture of Yun Ye

Yun Ye is probably the most mysterious person who has ever been involved in the domain name business. In fact, most people have never met Yun Ye and have only heard about him and his massive $164 million domain name portfolio sale to Marchex.

Yesterday evening on Twitter, noted domain attorney John Berryhill, who represented Yun Ye’s company (and still represents Frank’s Name Administration company), published this tweet with a photo of Yun Ye that was taken in 2005:

ICA Names Award After Lonnie Borck

internet-commerce-association-icaThe Internet Commerce Association (ICA) has announced it has  named an award in memory and honor of  domain investor Lonnie Borck, who unexpectedly passed away in October at the age of 47. The Lonnie Borck Memorial Award will be given annually to recognize an individual or organization for extraordinary efforts in championing the rights of domain name owners.

The ICA Board of Directors, along with the consensus of the ICA membership, selected David Weslow of Wiley Rein as the first recipient of the Lonnie Borck Memorial Award. In announcing the recipient of this year’a award, the ICA Board made note of David’s “dedication and persistence in his pro bono representation of Heidi Powell in the HeidiPowell.com dispute.” You can read more about this legal dispute on USA Today and Domain Name Wire.

Nat Cohen, an ICA board member, shared some thoughts about Lonnie and this new award:

Payoneer Escrow Hiring Director of Product Management

payoneer-escrowBrandon Abbey shared a job opening on LinkedIn that I want to share with readers. Payoneer is looking to hire a Director of Product Management in its Palo Alto, California office. This full time Director-level position will work directly with the Payoneer Escrow team.

I looked through the listed responsibilities of this job opening, and it seems like it could be a good fit for someone who has domain industry experience. From my perspective, a domain name escrow company is most effective if it can tailor its offerings specifically to the needs of domain investors. There are many types of domain name deals, and being able to service creative deals is helpful. Someone with domain investment experience should be able to offer their insight and experience to help Payoneer Escrow grow its domain industry business.

While Payoneer is new to the domain escrow space, the company is growing. In fact, according to an article in the New York Business Journal in October,

Daniel Law Named Interim ICA Executive Director

internet-commerce-association-icaI just received an email from the Internet Commerce Association (ICA) announcing that Daniel Law, a co founder of Rook Media, and currently a principle with Heron Investments Ltd., is taking on the position as Executive Director of the trade organization on an interim basis. Previously, the ICA had been operating without an Executive Director.

As ICA membership and the organization’s responsibilities have grown, this position has become increasingly important to fill.

Daniel will serve beside Philip Corwin, who has been the Counsel for the ICA for many years. In that role, Phil is responsible for lobbying on behalf of the ICA and helping to develop public positions and policies on behalf of the ICA. Daniel will also work closely with domain industry veteran Kamila Sekiewicz who serves as the ICA’s Operations Manager.

The ICA is fortunate that Daniel is willing to take on this role, as he brings a combination of high level management expertise, in depth knowledge of the industry, dedication to the ICA’s mission and collegiality that would be quite difficult to match,” Nat Cohen told the ICA membership.

On Monday, January 23rd, the ICA will be hosting a session at NamesCon called The Most Shocking UDRP Decisions of 2016, and I think this is a session domain investors will want to attend. I also understand that the ICA will be hosting
