Ask Companies to be Creative

One of the many reasons I like to use Escrow.com is because of their flexibility. I closed a deal a week ago that required a bit of assistance from Escrow.com on deal terms. It wasn’t a standard sale, but the buyer and I were able to work with them on a bit of a custom transaction that met our needs. Sometimes a bit of creativity is what it takes to get a deal done.

If you need a creative solution for something in the domain space, always ask an account representative or someone else within the company. The worst that happens is they say no. There are many scenarios that aren’t considered when launching products or services, and many companies will be happy to accommodate your needs, especially if your ask is simple for them to do.

When you ask for a company to do something custom for you, they will often be happy to do it. Many companies rely on customer feedback to help create products and services, as well as to enhance their products and services. Perhaps the creative solution you seek will be something they can implement across the board because it will help other customers who may face the same situation.

The creative deal that Escrow.com helped me create isn’t something they did because I have done a lot of business with them or because they are a long-time advertiser here. The company almost certainly did it because it is something that was easy to implement, and it is going to make them money. They also probably understood that if they couldn’t accommodate this deal, the buyer and I would have either used a third party attorney for escrow or not used escrow at all.

One of the reasons I like attending conferences is that it gives me a chance to meet with domain industry company decision makers and people who can help my business. I have found that companies are usually happy to make changes or special accommodations to attract and/or keep customers, especially if it is going to make them money. The next time you face a situation where the solution isn’t obvious, you should ask if the company can find a creative solution to your problem. They might even have a great idea you hadn’t thought about.

  1. Escrow.com will bend over backwards to help their customers. I once had a deal where the buyer could only pay with an international check. The purchase price was for over$20,000 but Escrow only accepts checks up to $2,000. The President of Escrow.cow, Brandon Abbey went out of his way and contacted me and the buyer directly and approved the transaction. This deal was dead in the water until Brandon Abbey went out of his way to help me out.

    That is great customer service!

  2. That is great to know not only in the case of escrow but excellent wisdom when dealing with any other companies in general. When it comes to completing the transaction and the creative proposal is something doable within reason it only makes perfect sense to ask.

As you mentioned the worst thing is they say no and now you have to think of another solution or way to go about it. You will be doing yourself a disservice by simply not asking and seeing where things go. “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”.

  3. I agree that Escrow, com is excellent when it comes to working with me. They do an great job of treating all transactions with a matter of urgency which S and A does not. When treating a transaction in mechanical steps and long time between each step, deals can sometimes fall apart. Plus, Escrow, com is far cheaper than S and A.

However, your transaction sounds like Stevan Lieberman’s escrow service would have been a better match.

I realize it is none of our business but curious what type of special terms were required. (You can hint about in a couple months šŸ™‚ )

  4. Escrow.com always provides outstanding service.

Recently they helped me complete a transaction by contacting the Buyer who was on holiday in Europe, and who hadn’t been able to approve the transfer of IP, after the Inspection Period.

Brandon Abbey & Sandra Gordon are super to work with — really top notch service and very friendly people.
