Announcing Geographic .CO Acquisition

I’ve been excited about this for the past few days, and I needed to make sure a few things were in place before announcing it. After reviewing my Founder’s Program application for a web development project, the .CO Registry has awarded my company the geographic domain name Bahamas.CO. I love the Bahamas and I plan to visit sometime this winter, and I will be back there again in March for Domain Roundtable.

Under the agreement with the Registry, I will need to launch a website on this domain name within the next few weeks, and I’ve already set the wheels in motion. I started a logo design contest on 99Designs today, and I will be working with my developer to build a beta website, hoping to launch the second week in August after he returns from a trip to NYC.

Press Release is below:

Silver Internet Ventures, LLC Commits To Building A Web Presence On The New .CO Domain

Joins Growing Ranks of People and Businesses Getting a Fresh Start on the Internet with a truly global, recognizable and credible domain name

JULY 22, 2010 – Silver Internet Ventures, LLC a web development company with experience developing geographic domain names, today announced that it has secured the domain Bahamas.CO and will be expanding its geographic web presence online. Silver Internet Ventures’ new Bahamas.CO website will be launched in mid-August.

Until now, Silver Internet Ventures has focused solely on US city .com domain names, owning and operating Lowell.com and Burbank.com. Bahamas.CO will be the company’s first major international geographic website, and the company will build a travel portal for people looking to learn about the islands of the Bahamas and the fun things to do in the Bahamas.

“I am very happy we were able to work with the .CO Registry to acquire Bahamas.CO,” said Elliot Silver of Silver Internet Ventures. “This is a huge opportunity to build a great website as others build their brands on .CO. I love the Bahamas, visited last year, and I can’t wait to get started on the Bahamas.CO website. These are exciting times, and with the recognition of .CO around the world, I am confident this is going to be a wise investment.”

Silver Internet Ventures, LLC joins the growing ranks of organizations and individuals who have already committed to the new .CO domain, including major global brands and Fortune 500 companies such as BMW, Cartier, Facebook, Google, Hilton, Overstock, Panasonic, and innovative media companies and startups like Twitter, Politico, Angel List, Challenge.co, and more.

With the .com domain running out of viable names, corporations, brands, web developers, agencies, entrepreneurs and others are turning to the new .CO domain as a way to enhance their existing Web presence or to get a fresh start with a global, recognizable and credible domain that better meets their business or branding needs.

“Whether you run a start-up, a small business, or a multi-billion-dollar corporation, you need a meaningful, memorable digital brand that tells people who you are and what you’re all about,” said Juan Diego Calle, chief executive officer of .CO Internet.   “Thanks to forward-thinking companies like Silver Internet Ventures, the .CO movement is gaining tremendous momentum, and we’re very excited to help create new online branding opportunities that the world has not seen since the Internet was first born.”

  1. Great name. Like you said, can have fun researching while you build it – and might be a tax write-off.

Looking forward to seeing the end result.

  2. Congrats E. Looking forward to follwing this one

Couple of questions…Did you request this specific domain? If not, did you simply request a whole bunch and just ended up with this one?

One last one…if you’re too busy, I’m willing to go to the Bahamas and do some research on your behalf.

  3. Do you think he would be so happy because of the traffic it would be losing to his .com? 😀 Just kidding. I have both bros as my Facebook friends but unfortunately I haven’t the pleasure of a personal acquaintance with them.

Since I parked it (about 14 hours), it’s already got 5 unique visits. WhyPark’s new domain apps make domains look like great minisites 🙂

  4. Elliot,

Good luck with Bahamas.co. By the way, I just sold Bahamas.tv to Michael Berkins and he stated he plans to develop that. Looks like we will have some good Bahamas sites to look at.

    Thanks, Jim

  5. Great name but I beat you: I got cocaine.co, now I need to setup an export biz and capitalize on a category killing domain! Instantly recognizable as top notch quality with the .co extension 🙂

  6. El, you little genius, you.

Don’t make me have to copy everything you’re doing just cuz you sound so dang smart.

I know what you’re trying to do… intimidate me to sell you my geo-Caribbean category killer domain – CaribbeanStates.com. Ha! I spent a big $0 to put up a website, moving the domain from Parked.com to Whypark.com. Then I used Whypark’s domain app for hotel directory comparison. Nice addition to domain site building! Granted, I spent about 15 minutes on this website, but already, I expect it hitting the top 20 googly results in a few weeks!

El — I know you. You’ll tell your wife you’re “going to the store”, but instead you’ll contact me by phone in a very calm business-like manner, which would go something like this:

“Hey, Doofus! You think you’re going to steal my traffic with your .com domain? Not going to happen, old man. I’ll come over to your house and hit your trees and lawn with a Costco economy TP package of Cottenelle!”

Then you’ll force me to sell my domain to you for cheap, so I would be able to stop raking up soggy toilet paper every Saturday morning.

Dang! I can’t believe I bought my home just a block away from you. What was I thinking? You don’t even invite me to your block parties unless I sell you one of my great domain names for 1/10 its value.

Yes, I am scared. It’s obvious you are a formidable force, especially with your “SILVER BAD BOYS GANG”, which harass any domainers who live within a 100 mile radius of you. I heard that even the Chef and Page Howe were members. Your gang’s disguises are cunning! You guys dress up in nothing but old lanyards from past TRAFFIC, DOMAINFEST, and DOMAIN ROUNDTABLE events. Sometimes those lanyards don’t cover everything they should, and your gang don’t wear skivvies!

Oh, all you readers — laugh it off. Go ahead… but wait until the infamous SBBG send YOU that email: “You’re tagged, Dork. We don’t even bother with UDRP’s or attys. We just come to your house and give you the Cottonelle treatment. Your rottweilers lick our hands, so that’s a waste of guard dog money. Plus, the chief of Police is my wife’s dad and his brother is the State Senator. Give me what I want and maybe I’ll be your friend… *cough*.”

I admit, El, you’re scary. But you confuse me when you give me and my family great birthday parties. (can we avoid the busload of Elvis clowns at my next bday party – I had nightmares for weeks).

Otherwise, no complaints here! (and I’ll sell you the domain for cheap to keep the peace).

This has been another “Successclick Tales From the Domaining Darkside” production.

  7. Can you do a follow up post and walk through how you did your founders program ap, when u submitted, etc.. and what your strategy here was…it sounds as if you were only targeting this domain…thanks
