Alexa Ranking Change With URL Change

Alexa Ranking

One of the unfortunate things about a domain name change is that the Alexa ranking is going to be impacted. As of the day after switching urls, my blog (ElliotsBlog.com) currently has an Alexa ranking of 17,063, which I think is fairly strong. On the other hand, DomainInvesting.com, my new url, has an Alexa ranking of over 1.7 million.

Because of the way Alexa calculates its rank, I don’t believe I can tell Alexa that I switched domain names and have the former url’s ranking be combined with the current ranking. Most likely, Alexa will detect the traffic to the new url over time, and then it will begin ranking this new website.

Alexa’s main ranking system seems to report the three month moving average rank instead of a daily, weekly, or monthly capture. What this means is that it’s likely going to take 3 or more months for Alexa to register an accruate ranking for this new site, especially because DomainInvesting.com wasn’t really developed before and didn’t have a ranking prior to my development.

I don’t rely on the Alexa ranking for anything more than pride, but it will still be tough to see the ElliotsBlog.com ranking get worse while the DomainInvesting.com ranking slowly improves. I wish there was a way to notify Alexa about a url change for my website, but apparently there isn’t much I can do.

  1. I would not worry much about it. While Alexa numbers are a means of sharing some traffic metrics, they are not accurate. Alexa does not track mobile traffic and with the proliferation of smart phones that can be a large chunk of a site’s traffic. Eventually, your ratings at DomainInvesting.com will be updated to reflect the traffic, as long as the redirects from ElliotsBlog.com are permanent. The best proof of traffic is Google analytics.

  2. Hello Elliot Silver, I change my blogspot blog with new domain, Now my alexa rank gone, Did you find any answer, How to get it back, As you said alexa will rank basing 3 months flow, Its hard for me to wait for 3 months.

  3. When i change my Domain name then new RANK show for my new website. actually there is no option to change domain with same rank but I would not worry much about it. While Alexa numbers are a means of sharing some traffic metrics, they are not accurate. Alexa does not track mobile traffi as my website has more traffic from mobile devices. as my website deal in Lyrics http://androlyrics.com/ . more traffic is come from Mobile user. The best proof of traffic is Google analytics.
